EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"A Simple Plan" -- You should simply plan to think *hard* before seeing this movie at all, let alone with any of your children. Yup, some parents still take their kids to see R-rated flicks thinking they are teaching the kids about the "real world."

Murder. Booze. Nudity. The most foul of the foul words. God's name with the four letter expletive. It's all there. And you'll see (if you go to this movie) a crow eating the flesh of the face of a dead man. You'll get to see murder by gunfire to the back and to the head. You'll get to see murder by request and murder by suffocation. And more. You'll get to see a nude pregnant woman -- about 8.5 months along. You'll get to hear the most foul word of the three/four letter vocabulary 29 times plus 58 uses of other three/four letter words PLUS 20 uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive and 10 more with the four letter expletive. You'll also get some great ideas on how to commit a crime, how to cover it up, and how to encourage others to help you with it and with its cover-up.

FINDINGS / SCORING: TITLE (YEAR) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost intermediate level points twice to attempted murder with tire iron to avoid discovery and a firearm. Wanton Violence/Crime lost maximum level points three times due to a crow eating the flesh off the face of a dead man, a theme of accomplice to murder and aiding and abetting murder.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost no intermediate level points but lost maximum level points 29 times due to the use of the most foul of foul words.

Sex/Homosexuality (S) lost intermediate level points once due to full frontal nudity of a pregnant woman. Sex/Homosexuality lost no maximum level points.

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost intermediate level points twice due to drinking while driving and a bar with booze and drunkenness.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost no intermediate level points but lost maximum level points ten times due to the use of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost intermediate level points three times due to murder by suffocation of an injured man to avoid discovery, murder by firearm (with overtones of self-defense), and a murder of a brother by a brother. Murder/Suicide lost maximum level points twice due to graphic murder of a sheriff and graphic murder by gunfire to the face.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • vulgar gestures
  • urinating in public
  • use of firearms
  • presence of alcoholic beverages
  • many, many lies to deflect ownership of wrongdoing
  • exposure to adult underwear
  • encouraging deceit to place blame on others
  • threats with firearms
  • theft
  • "Broke [male appendage]"
  • request to be killed
  • a firearm to a head
  • abuse of a wife
  • encouragement to commit/continue a crime.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
