EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"My Favorite Martian" (PG) was a very good example of the utility of the CAP media analysis model to reveal micro-elements. The movie was equivalent in magnitude to an R-rated movie of 1995/6 in sexual programming. Instead of presenting a few graphic examples, this movie used tons of little flippant "defendable" sexual matters: defendable by new age ethics as permissible and acceptable -- another technique of the moral relativists and pansexualists to lower even further the threshold of acceptability and inhibition; to further steal childhood from children at earlier and earlier ages. Now that nudity is permissible even in cartoon broadcast programming (e.g., "Dilbert" and "The Simpsons") and in live-actor/actress PG-13 movies and, to a lesser extent, in PG movies, how much lower can the threshold of acceptability fall until nudity is permissible in G-rated features? Then we'll see how long our kids, when they grow to be teenagers, can keep their clothes on and their innate rebellion (foolishness) in check. [Prov. 22:15 "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child..." and Prov. 10:23 "It is as sport to a fool to do mischief:..." and 1 Sam. 15:23 "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry..."]

In the shadow of "Jurassic Park" a security guard was eaten in chomps and slurps by a Martian creature, albeit clearly fantasy -- at least to you and I. In the shadow of "Antz" a disembodied head gave orders and directions. There was abduction, forced drugging, gunfire, and use of firearms to control to give a smidgen of violence to "My Favorite Martian." Skimpy swimwear, a sexual magazine, inappropriate touch of a female posterior, implied nudity by hiding only private parts with convenient objects, adult underwear, flash nudity, intentional manual jiggling of breasts, heavy cleavage and upper breast exposure, exaggerated cartoon breasts, and other equally influential elements dragged the Sex/Homosexuality score down to the dregs of the R-rated barrel.

Use of the three/four letter word vocabulary invaded the script like a sore throat at least five times as did the use of God's name in vain, though without the four letter expletive. To top it all off was a resurrection of the Martian by his "magic" suit, a power I thought was reserved to God.

FINDINGS / SCORING: My Favorite Martian (1999) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Sex/Homosexuality (S) lost intermediate level points once due to exposure of adult male nudity to an adult female (private parts not seen by viewer). Sex/Homosexuality lost no maximum level points.

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • five uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary
  • five uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive
  • "...old f--ts..." about the elderly
  • male anatomical references
  • sexual references, comments, and innuendo
  • animation of exaggeration of female breasts
  • implied nudity by hiding only private parts with coincidental objects
  • skimpy swimwear
  • inappropriate touch to female posterior twice
  • imitation moon shot (willful exposure of posterior) by an animated empty uniform
  • reference to male anatomy ("zipper trouble" with sounds of agony)
  • vengeful and spoiled female adult being violent with co-worker
  • kidnapping
  • forced drugging
  • heavy cleavage and upper breast exposure
  • talking disembodied head
  • jiggling of breasts by straps as sexual advance
  • a hit to the stomach
  • camera angle to focus viewer on private parts
  • a woman in a short dress being jostled and tossed, exposing otherwise covered body parts including crotch
  • lies to get possibly sexual opportunity
  • reckless driving
  • gunfire and firearms to control
  • an adult male on a commode
  • adult underwear and flash nudity
  • "b---head"
  • resurrection by a "magic" uniform
  • sexual magazine

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
