EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:
"Goodbye, Lover" (R) -- goodbye inhibitions. Indeed, this is one of the movies which is likely to cause some to lower their threshold of inhibitions. At least, due to the tonnage of sexual programming in it, there is likely to be a furthering of the acceptance and/or tolerance of previously unacceptable sexual behavior.
The movies starts with predatory femme fatale, Sandra (Patricia Arquette) who is married to Jake (Dermot Mulroney) who is the brother of Ben (Don Johnson) who is Sandra's lover and is having an affair with co-worker Patricia (Mary-Louise Parker) who has an agenda of her own (with Jake), conducting a porn phone talk with Ben. *-whew-*
Sandra is not at all concerned about gamming. Come to think of it, the whole show presented maximization of the female form, legs, and cleavage. Short skirts were the uniform of the day - SHORT skirts. The viewer will see both male and female underwear fall the the ankles of the wearer. They will see what is best called masked sexual intercourse. The actions motions and sounds are there. There is just no nudity. Except for one case, the nudity is masked by sheets, clothes, or some conveniently placed object. Adult underwear is frequent. There are even hints of homosexuality and sexual sadomasochism. And with all the sexual activities comes the sex talk, comments, innuendo, and suggestions -- some in a church.
Ellen Degeneras (a homosexuality statement by itself) and Ray McKinnand played the parts of a pair of detectives with Degeneras, of course, as the wiser and more worldly senior partner. Degeneras was bent on belittling her partner who was clearly a Christian man trying to apply his beliefs and mores to his work, which was fodder for Degeneras' obsession with insulting her Christian partner. Degeneras ended up chumming with the femme fatale Sandra after they were successful in their criminal endeavors of getting lots of money out of the death of Ben.
And, of course, foul language saturates the script -- really saturates it!
