SUMMARY / COMMENTARY: Godzilla 2000 (PG) -- a journey back into the 60s and 70s. With a small smile, you'll journey back into the 60s and 70s through the original Japanese Godzilla flicks, complete with the rubber Godzilla suit, city-wide destruction of prop sets built by the masters of miniaturization, and the voice-over dubbing. Even the breakup of pavement and bridges was amazingly realistic. But in this one, they've added some new age to it -- namely flippant use foul language. If passed through a CurseFree TV unit, this would make a great family popcorn night flick (except for those who might be prone to nightmares from monster flicks). As I write this report and reminisce about the good ole days with Friday nite Godzilla, I am almost misted up from seeing our ole pal again. But is he a good guy in this version as he has been in so many other versions protecting mankind from evil invasion from within and without, or is he a bad guy bent on destroying the human race again? And I was a little disappointed to find that Mothra did not make at least one cameo appearance. Nor did Megalon, the Smog Monster, nor King Kong. Those of us who are enough of film buffs will see the Duke (John Wayne), Alien, and a few other American entertainment items from the past. This Godzilla 2000 was nowhere near the quality of Godzilla (1998), but I suspect the budget was a bit smaller for this version. And this 2000 version was nowhere near as morally invasive as the 1998 version, either. Also, Godzilla in this 2000 version was more true to his former self than in the 1998 version: a little brutally cute, but not grotesque like the 1998 Godzilla. A scientist fed up with university politics and his wife and daughter trek the countryside to track Godzilla to study him while an ex-associate of his, now the head of CCI (the Duke wannabe), tries to find Godzilla to kill him. And as they find, track, and try to kill Godzilla, a 60 million year old spaceship surfaces from the depths of the ocean to do battle with Godzilla and to turn into another megamonster. Why they do battle and who wins is for you to find out if you choose to watch this flick. Freckled throughout this 90-minute journey into the past were 10 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary but none of the most foul of the foul words. While God's name was used at least once in vain, it was without the four letter expletive. Indeed, this movie actually had the actors and actresses calling on God for help and safety. But then it is not a western-hemisphere film. There was destruction of abandoned/evacuated buildings and helicopters in flight, some dangers to inhabitants of smaller crumbling buildings, lots of disaster and monster frights, and one unseen fatality by Godzilla but NO gore and no murder or suicide. And there was no nudity, no hint of it, no excessive cleavage, no sexual innuendo, no sex talk/insults/comments, no gaping face kissing, no inappropriate touching -- no sexual programming at all! The vast majority of the violence in this movie is not directed at man by man. It is at and from a clearly fantasy monster that does not even hint of Satanic power or presence. Is this the sort of violence the Bible strongly admonishes against as in Prov. 3:31-32, Prov. 4:17, Jer. 22:3, or Luke 3:14? I don't think so, but I don't know. Does Phil 4:8 apply to the violence in Godzilla? While the foul language certainly has the potential to teach or cause your child(ren) to sin by copycatting [Luke 17:2, 1 Cor. 15:33], does the behavior in this flick begat parallel behavior in real life as God warns us [1 Cor. 15:33] and as four professional public health agencies advise us? I simply do not know. Tell me what you think. And tell me Chapter and Verse if you know of or find any. As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie.
