SUMMARY / COMMENTARY: THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE (G) -- there are some possible lesson-building tools, but that is not my call -- it is yours. Before I get into the facts about The Emperor's New Groove let me break with policy again and answer a question I've been asked a thousand times if once: "Which movies do you LIKE?" Well, I liked this movie! There are some possible lesson-building tools in it, but that is not my call -- it is yours. YOU, the parent/grandparent decide what is right for your kids, not me. I just give you Rock-solid tools to help you make an informed decsion for yourself whether a movie is or is not fit for your kids or yourself. I say "Rock-solid" because the teachings and expectations of Jesus -- which form our investigation standards -- never change [Heb. 13:8]. They are NOT influenced by the slippery worldview ethic [Acts 20:30]. And that is why a CAP analysis of 1995 will be as reliable as this one and one calculated in 2010 and beyond. I am not going to discuss the plot of this movie to ensure I do not spoil a possibly enjoyable experience with your kids. All I will give you in this analysis report is the findings. Arrrgh! I gotta tell you a little! Just let me tell you that the snobby and profoundly arrogant emperor who, in the commercials, may seem like the type of character to which you do NOT want your young adolescents exposed, gets his comeupance though a carefully constructed series of fantasy events that, in some ways, can be used as teaching templates. There are several quality moments in this 73-minute Disney flick (Surprised? I am.). If you watch this movie, see if you can find the capitalization on script from The Wizard of Oz and The Fly (original). Any of us who have suffered through the joy [Ps. 127:3] of raising two or more children through adolescence will appreciate some delightful reproductions of a few of the moments we have faced which give meaning to a lighter perspective of Prov. 22:15. And I was moved almost to tears by the laughter and joy expressed by the throngs of young children in the auditorium. They were laughing from the heart, not at somebody losing his pants or getting hit in the crotch or adolescent snip talk or other similar vulgarities, but at honest and relatively wholesome fun. Thank you, Disney. You did good ... this time. It is, however, a bitter pill to swallow knowing you have done things like Kids, Chasing Amy, and Pulp Fiction [Hebr. 5:14]. There are also some matters in The Emperor's New Groove that may be of concern to parents and grandparents. An old man who broke the emperor's groove (his rhythm) was thrown out an high-altitude window. Some evil magic was used to transform, and it was NOT Marry Poppins style magic. There was the showing of meanness to kindness [Ps. 35:12] with revenge on the meanness [Rom. 12:19, 1Pet. 3:9] and deceit plus lies [Prov. 12:5]. An episode of verbal battle between a "good conscience" critter and an "evil conscience" critter on either shoulder of the stooge of the evil advisor of the emperor (the "witch") made the evil conscience sound rather attractive and logical [Isa. 5:20]. And two expressions were a little extreme in delivery as well as intent: "You fool" [Matt. 5:22] and "I'm going to kill you." As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie.
