SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

*Brokedown Palace* (PG-13) -- another teenage quest for freedom, ending up in prison.

Two teen girls, Alice (Claire Danes) and Darlene (Kate Beckinsale) grasping for freedom lied to "exchange" a free trip to Hawaii, compliments of their parents, for a trip to Bangkok, Thailand. Both girls end up being patsies to smooth drug smuggler, Nick Parks (Daniel Lapaine) who planted heroin in their luggage, who turned them in to the Thai police to shield six other patsies doing the same thing. What a nice guy. After using sex (of course) to befriend the girls, Parks offers the girls a free trip to Hong Kong. On the concourse to the plane the Thai police nab the the girls. In an attempt to prepare a complex story, the writers gave Alice a life as a liar and a trouble-maker from day one. In the end, Alice lied to take on blame for the presence of drugs in their belongings -- another example of the entertainment industry excusing ignominy with a "message" of love and sacrifice. This, of course, was effective in making daddy seem the bad guy (as usual) for not believing Alice when she told him "I didn't do it!" Another example of Isaiah. 5:20: "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil;..."

The use of sexual material in the programming, while not particularly invasive, was plentiful. Included were full rear nudity in a prison shower room, admissions of sexual activity as though the participants had just hiccuped, revealing dress, and sensual motions with ghosting of female anatomy through clothing. Teen drinking and illegal drugs appeared throughout the script like pepper on scrambled eggs. About every four minutes God's name in vain was heard with and without the four letter expletive. Foul language, including the most foul word at least once, was heard at about the same rate.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
