EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"Blast form the Past" (PG-13) -- an insult TO the past. Much effort and energy was used to make the purity and ethics of the past seem undesirable and odd: that we have "grown up" and no longer need such inhibitions and restraints. With a zero score in both Impudence/Hate and in Sex/Homosexuality, this movie was clearly equivalent in magnitude to R-rated movies on 1995/6. Makes sense since the "new" PG-13 rating takes a slice off the top of the R rating.

"Blast from the Past" was not a violent movie, but it was a sex show for adolescents. And a moral decay tool for all. Too bad, too. It could have been a warm love story and a delightful romp. But n-o-o-o-o. This is the nineties! The heavy homosexual presence, dialogue, and mannerisms, the bold flowing of booze, and the "colorful" language are each a vital part of the new enlightened and progressive age! Also, it is nowadays acceptable and encouraged to mock Jesus (it hurt to even type that). Porn shops and pornography should be accepted as merely a form of wholesome entertainment. And nowadays it is socially fashionable to use the previously questionable four letter word and the name of what once was God (that hurt, too) in vain with OR without a spicy supplement or two.

Well, it is not merely the nineties, it is the eleventh hour. All this stuff is WRONG, folks. Wrong whether you or I believe it or not!

FINDINGS / SCORING: Blast from the Past (1999) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost no intermediate level points but maximum level points twice due to a constant theme of rudeness toward and belittlement of Adam's innocence and politeness, and due to the use of the most foul word of the three/four letter word vocabulary.

Sex/Homosexuality (S) lost intermediate level points three times due to transvestism, a homosexual claim ("...can be a boy OR a girl for you"), and transvestism prostitution. Sex/Homosexuality lost maximum level points twice due to a heavy homosexual presence throughout the movie and the presentation of the interior of a porn shop (pictures blurred but titles readable).

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost intermediate level points twice due to two instances of "naughty" lust for booze.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost intermediate level points once due to the wearing of an upside down Cross. Offense to God lost maximum level points seven times, six due to the use of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive and once due to mockery of servitude to Jesus.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost no points at all.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • at least 15 additional presentations of booze and drinking
  • at least 8 additional uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive
  • at least 15 presentations of alcoholic drink and drinking and reference to drug usage
  • prostitution and propositioning
  • adult underwear
  • multiple vulgar anatomical references
  • repeated skimpy swimwear
  • multiple sexual references and innuendo
  • homosexual comments
  • multiple presentation of and entering (once) a porn shop
  • encouragement to lie as ice-breaker
  • vulgar dancing
  • revealing evening wear
  • reckless driving
  • attempted cheating
  • firearm (without shots but attempted shooting)
  • belittlement of sexual purity
  • plane crash into residence (no injuries/deaths)
  • fighting in a bar
  • car wreck with harsh words and light attack after car wreck

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
