SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

*Big Daddy* (PG-13) -- a big disappointment. On a zero to 100 scale, PG-13 movies of 1995/96 earned CAP final scores of 55 to 67. *Big Daddy* earned a 44. Remember that movies which used to be R-rated movies are now R and PG-13. This one just did not have full nudity and the most foul word.

This movie was nothing more (and nothing less) than snubbing traditional manners and parental authority plus some sexual material (including a strong, obvious homosexual content) and lotsa language (with much of it before and by a five year old boy).

Big daddy Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler) becomes a surrogate father as the illegitimate son Julian (played by the twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse) of Sonny's friend and roommate, Kevin (Jon Stewart) appears at Sonny's door. At that time, Kevin is at the airport leaving for an extended trip to the far east and leaves Sonny in charge of the boy. And Mom has died. So, Sonny is now Julian's "father."

Sandler is very good at playing the part of a licentious campy buffoon without any sense of traditional ethics. Sonny decides to let Julian do just about anything the boy wants -- more freedom from authority. Five year old kids do not react well to such freedom, but of course this movie makes it seem like a piece of cake for the boy. Julian wants a night light so Sandler gives him a "Live Nudes" neon sign. Sandler teaches Julian a series of bad manners such as urinating on city buildings, snorting out a rope of mucous to then suck it back up, and other typically bad manners. Sandler also teaches the boy to use the three/four letter word vocabulary AND God's name in vain WITH the four letter expletive. And as usual, all the ignominy is buried under and hidden by a theme of warmth and love to lessen attention to the ignominy which very effectively encourages its acceptance -- a standard device of the entertainment industry.

I want to make the next points stand out, so I am giving them their own paragraph. *Big Daddy* is a heavily homosexual movie, including an open-mouth homosexual kiss (between two males), many homosexual references and innuendo, even homosexual statues and men with their arms around each other and NOT in a glad-to-see-ya way. And, of course, Sandler and others treat the homosexual kiss and other homosexual matters as issues of normality as if to say practicing homosexuality is okay. The audience certainly did not think so. In one case, Sandler patted the [clothed] genitals of another man.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
