What were the MPAA thinking? Or were they thinking at all when they declared this film "fit" for 13 year old kids. And, yes, whether intentional they declare it as "fit" for 13 year old kids by stamping it with the "PG-13 -- May not be suitable for children under 13." By saying it may not be fit for children under 13 it says it is fit for children 13 or older. [Ps. 12:8] And just about any 13 year old will agree. Well, there is no law that says mom/dad has to let their 13 year old kids watch a PG-13 film or any other film. The PG-13 You, Me and Dupree earned a final score of 34 out of 100. That makes it a "hard" R-13 (see our R-13 finding). All the R-rated films in the comparative baseline database earned scores of 54 and below. I have heard or read or thought of it myself, which one I don't remember, that the PG-13 stratum is a slice off the top off of "R." If this film is a true example of "PG-13" it would be better said that the PG-13 stratum is now the top third off the R stratum. The scoring distribution of this film is disturbing. An investigation area score of zero out of 100 in Impudence/Hate (I), primarily due to profanity! [2 Tim. 2:16 - 17] Zero in Sexual Immorality (S)! [Gal. 5:19] Zero in Drugs/Alcohol (D)! [Gal. 5:21] Twenty-six in Offense to God (O), primarily due to the use of His name in vain both with and without the four letter expletive! [Deut. 5:11] The only good things about the content of this film is that the Wanton Violence/Crime (I) investigation area found only a couple instances of violence and the Murder/Suicide (M) investigation area found nothing. It wasn't even that good of a thespian work. If you want the gory details, read on. If you do not like to read about vulgarity in entertainment, move on to something else. But your kids will hear and see on-screen all that I tell you herein if you let them watch this show. Masturbation with partial nudity. Intercourse (no gender-specific parts seen). Full male nudity (repeatedly). It's all there for your adolescents with the blessings of the MPAA. Owen Wilson as Dupree even tries to excuse the display of nudity with "It's natural to be naked." [**] He further tries to excuse the lowering of the threshold of acceptability with his use of "Live a little" to excuse lewd and immoral behaviors, as if sin is required to "live." God disagrees with him. [Ezek. 16:58, Col. 3:5, 1Ths. 4:3] Drinking and drunkenness in this film are a serious danger for the target age stratum according to the American College of Physicians (ACP). Even the University of Connecticut. A study by the ACP has found an undeniable link between the presentation of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in and as entertainment and abuse of them and arrogance/defiance with them by adolescents. And teaching/causing youth to abuse alcohol/tobacco (or drugs) by emboldening youth with them in and as entertainment invokes Luke 17:2. If alcoholic beverages in entertainment were not a problem for our young, why is there and why has there been such a push to get and keep booze commercials off prime time broadcast TV? Even the University of Connecticut corroborates the ACP finding. [Eph. 5:18] Drinking and drunkenness in and as entertainment are a danger, folks. This film is a perfect example of the decay of the standards of the MPAA. And of our finding. We told you about it in 2000 and updated the on-going finding in 2001 and 2002. Harvard University scientists made a finding in 2004 that agreed with ours, a full four years after the CAP finding. And we used God's Word to reveal it! While the Harvard study was a one-time affair, ours is a continuing study. While we have yet to find the funding to compile our massive data since 2002, there appears to be a continuing trend in the decay of MPAA's standards of acceptance. You, Me and Dupree is a perfect example of it endorsing, by their "PG-13 stamp of approval", such lewdness in and as entertainment for kids. 'Does the expression "stealing childhood from children" now have more definition for you?' The film is about, Randolph Dupree (Owen Wilson), a friend of Carl Peterson (Matt Dillon) since high school, becoming financially destitute and wedging himself between Carl and his brand new wife, Molly (Kate Hudson). Dupree depends on Carl's history with him as BFF. Carl's [initial] softness is no match for Dupree's cunning. Dupree is a master at sponging and using charm to do it. The poster is a perfect expression of Dupree wedging himself between Carl and Molly, ultimately forcing Carl and Molly to be at odds with each other, dividing the pair into two parts. "...if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand." [Matt. 12:25, Mark 3:25] And the Peterson house was ready to fall -- until Carl wised up. To make matters worse Molly's dad and Carl's boss, Robert Thompson (Michael Douglas), owner and president of Thompson Land Development does not help matters any. Bob is against his daughter's wedding since her wedding and inherent name change will spell the end of the Thompson family name. He infuriates Carl with little digs such as corporate maneuvers to lessen Carl's importance, wanting Carl to hyphenate his last name to Peterson-Thompson, favoring Dupree over him and other matters to wedge Carl and Molly apart and Carl into oblivion. I am not going to go into the usual level of detail about the plot. Please take the time to inspect closely the listing of observations in the Findings/Scoring section before you decide whether this film is or is not fit for your family. Please. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
