Murata, John J. Strauss, Betsy Sullenger, Eric Tannenbaum Writing Credits: Moe Jelline Cinematography/Camera: David Hennings Music: Nathan Wang Film Editing: David Rennie Casting: Gail Goldberg Production Design: Craig Stearns Art Direction: Charles Daboub Jr Viewed on Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVD With a final score of 80 out of 100, You Again earned a spot in the range of scores earned by PG-rated films (68 to 86 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database. This makes the content of You Again equivalent to the content of PG films. Just a few points more would have placed it at the low end of the scoring range earned by G-rated films (87 to 100 out of 100). The MPAA label reads "PG for brief mild language and rude behavior." Our scoring distribution agrees with the "rude behavior" but bless me if I could find a single use of the three/four letter word vocabulary nor did I see any in the closed captioning. I guess the MPAA must have been referring to the sometimes hateful talk between characters (which were incorporated into the Impudence/Hate investigation area as lies, social warfare and a few other matters of impudent/hateful behavior or talk).. If you look in the Findings/Scoring listing under Sexual Immorality (S) you will find "homosexual song, twice." Though there is no direct reference to homosexuality in the words heard I am going to be politically incorrect and point out some hidden truth because it is the truth. The song in the point is the pop power ballad We Are the Champions by the rock band called Queen whose lead singer, Farrokh Bulsara, a.k.a., Freddie Mercury, one of the best of the century, died of AIDS in 1991 ... a loss to the music world he was that good. The phrase "we are the champions" is used in so many ways by so many people for so many reasons in society today because of that song. Though the phrase is sung as a rally cry for many reasons, it is typically sung at sports events to charge up the spirits of competetors. While the phrase is a perfect rally cry for victors in competition, such a matter had nothing to do with the writing of that song. It was a song to encourage and emvolden they who choose to practice homosexuality; calling the practitioners of homosexuality (the "we") champions whether merited or not. Freddie, a self-proclaimed practitioner of homosexuality, was singing camaraderie to others who likewise choose to practice homosexuality, encouraging them to think of other practitioners of homosexuality as champions, about being fighters for others who likewise choose to practice homosexuality. Another phrase of the song, "...and we'll keep on fighting till the end" was not about competing until that last yard or that last goal, basket or buzzer, but was about death ... his own ... in never-give-up defiance. So, the next time you chime in on "we are the champions" you'll know what it is you are championing in the minds of those who know the truth about that song. I may have burst many bubbles by revealing this truth but for one to unknowingly allow one's ego and bravado to be inflated with misdirected and manufactured grandeur -- with that which God has decreed to be sin [1 Cor. 6:9 - 10, Jude 1:7 and more] -- can indeed be devastating once the truth is known. And if that makes me a takes-all-the-fun-out, then so be it. Let the Truth be champion, not letting the Truth be twisted and counterfeited until it "hturTs" with the greatest "hurT" in the end ... or as the end. PS: Yes, I said "choose to practice homosexuality." Each and every non-autonomic movement of the human body is a choice. No exceptions. No debate. Practicing homosexuality is therefore a choice. While there may be such a thing as same-sex attraction ... I do not know and have never experienced it ... same sex attraction does not make one "gay", acting on it does, again making practicing homosexuality a choice. If you share what I have presented in the previous two paragraphs with anyone, please do so in love and compassion and do not try to look down your nose at anyone for any reason. "You" are not better than "they." Let us work to help each other out of the bondage of sin, even and especially our own. Jesus came to save the sinner, even I, as well as the righteous. Twenty-two year old Marni Olivia Olsen (Kristen Bell), PR Exec of the RMK Entertainment Group in Los Angeles gives a pep talk to junior PR agents. Marni uses her high school history to make her point -- that if she can overcome labels and the scars of torment and stereotyping, anyone can. Marni's high school history is one of social assault as a four-eyed, zit-faced freak with a necklace on her teeth. But not 'ny more. Marni is now a braces-free, zit-free, contact-wearing lovely adult who is successful in her field, so successful the boss promotes her to a VP position in New York. But before assuming her new job, Marni has to attend the wedding of her brother, Will (James Wolk). While flying home to help with the proceedings, Marni discovers her brother is marrying her high school social nemesis, Joanna 'JJ' Clarke (Odette Yustman). At the Ridgefield High School Joanna was the female bully, the "warden" at the Ridgefield "prison" wreaking brutal torment on the "losers" with most of her attacks focused on Marni. To Joanna, Marni was the chief loser and key target of her social war campaigns. At the pre-wedding meeting of the two families -- the first "You Again" -- Marni painfully knows who Joanna' evil past but keeps it to herself ... for now. As a sidebat note, I could be wrong and hope I am but it seems that people who can so easily and deeply be as mean and hateful as portrayed by Joanna always will be: that if they can change they must choose to do so but typically don't; that only Jesus can change the heart of such a person ... and only if the person lets Him. In other words, it seems that if a person can be that way once, s/he will be again. Jesus warns us about such people that if you tell them once and tell them again but still won't listen, to have nothing to do wth them. [Titus 3:10-11] Will knows nothing of the torment Marni has suffered at the hands of his intended, Joanna and Joanna is bent on making certain Will does not learn of her past. But Marni is bent on protecting Will who had protected her all her life by exposing Joanna's real self. At any cost. Even though unintentionally, at the cost of Will's happiness. The social warfare is underway! Also at the pre-wedding meeting of the two families, Marni's mother, Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis), famous for the Ridgefield High School signature cheer routine, the Byer Flyer, discovers that Joanna's caregiver aunt, Ramona (Sigourney Weaver) is her high school social nemesis. There is the second "You Again!" And the social warfare develops a new campaign on a new front, spiteful shell after spiteful shell. Rather than spoil the film any further, let me get into that which most of you visit our pages -- the content. Following are brief discussions of the content by individual investigation area but an itemized listing of the findings is provided in the Findings/Scoring section. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 71 out of 100 No one gets killed. No guts are splattered on the wall behind any victim. And no one breaks a dozen traffic laws in a car chase. But there are a few instances of "slapstick" violence and social assaults. One might classify the violence content of this film as "clean violence" but no matter how slight the violence might seem it can and does take its toll on the observer, especially demonstrations of social warfare on the teen age stratum. Such display in and as entertainment can embolden the viewer to calculate how and upon whom to wage social war which, in many cases, is vengeance which is not ours to have. [Prov. 3:31, Rom. 12:18, Rom. 12:19, Prov. 3:31-32] Impudence/Hate (I) - 54 out of 100 As I said in the Summary/Commentary section I found not one use of the three/four letter word vocabulary in the entire 102 minutes of the film. But all the lies, the deceit, the social assaults and more led to the loss of almost half of the starting 100 points of this investigation area. This is the lowest scoring of the six investigation areas. Most of the point losses due to content found by this investigation area are due to social warfare, the get-even nature, the bully tormenting and deceit nature. [1 Tim. 2:1 - 3] Note that it is the film content revealed by this investigation area that waranted the display of the red CAPCon Alter light atop this report page. Sexual Immorality (S) - 80 out of 100 In addition to the use of stanzas from a song written to encourage homosexuality practitioners, some of the moves of the cheerleaders are rather vulgar, specifically the pelvic thrusts. If anyone can convince me that a pelvic thrust (standing with knees bent and apart, torso leaned back, jutting the crotch forward) can mean anything but the obvious, I may reconsider this finding. An instance of when Curtis throws her leg up high in a dress in front of her family and a couple innuendo round out the content applicable to this investigation area. [Rom. 13:13, Prov. 30:20, Gal. 5:19] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 84 out of 100 The only instances of content applicable to this investigation area were the few sights of booze of one kind or another and the one instance of drinking. Tobacco and abuses of prescription drugs were no where to be found. Offense to God (O) - 93 out of 100 God's name was abused twice. And that is twice too many. God is not slack about they who choose to abuse His name. [Deut 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 Not one instance of murder or suicide was noted. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
