EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"Waking Ned Devine" -- with nudity! Yessirree. Another nudity movie. But, your attention please! This one is a PG movie! And I mean nudity, and of old men nonetheless. Have men of this age nothing else better to do?

"Waking Ned Devine" was not a violent movie. And it was not a particularly impudent movie. But it shore was a nudie movie. About the only violent material in this show was the emotional invasion by the presentation of a dead old man with invasive insults to it -- manhandling of it to steal from it and prepare it for fraudulent activities. And an old woman, who was portrayed as the town's undesirable, was killed by being knocked off a cliff by a car. While not necessarily a deeply influential entertainment presence in and of itself, the impact of the general desensitization by the entertainment industry was evidenced as a girl in the audience said "She deserved it." Yeah, the movie portrayed her as a real unlikable old lady, malicious and conniving, but no one `deserves' to die because of their personality. This movie presented lies throughout! God's name in vain and popular variations of it, though without the four letter expletive, was used in just about every paragraph of monologue.

FINDINGS / SCORING: Waking Ned Devine (1998) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost maximum level points once as a price for a continuous theme of fraud (lies to gain undeserved lottery winnings).

Sex/Homosexuality (S) lost intermediate points eight times due to full adult nudity.

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • 23 uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive
  • a man in a bathtub
  • a man and a woman in bed together
  • scenes of a dead man
  • repeated manhandling of a dead body for selfish gain
  • at least six presentations of alcoholic beverage consumption and barroom celebrations, including a toast to a man's death
  • theft from a dead body
  • discussion of a child as illegitimate
  • death of an undesirable character

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
