A movie is entertainment. United 93 is not a documentary of one of the most atrocious acts of cowardice on the American people in the history of this great and noble nation. There is some file footage in the film, but it is still a movie. United 93 is a best-guess but thoroughly researched recreation of the actual acts of nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists to commandeer four American commercial jet airliners on September 11, 2001 and fly two of them into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon and one in an empty Pennsylvania field. This act of malice and hatred killed 2,986 people. The Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941, which led to our declaration of war on Japan in World War II, killed 2403, fewer than 911. This movie is centered on the United Airlines Flight 93, the flight that crashed in an empty field outside Shanksville, PA while ostensibly on its way to crash into the the White House or the United States Capitol building. Though this film is about real events, the behaviors and actions portrayed are not real. United 93 is a sobering movie which portrays a vulnerability none of us would care to admit. It is a movie about an event that is indeed hard to take: a movie that will likely rile those of us whose hearts were crushed by the real events. But that is all it is -- a movie -- another movie that reveals the power of filmmaking to conjure emotions. I am not going to spend a lot of time on the Summary/Commentary about this film due to the sensitivity of the sore spot it left t on the American people. But I will share with you His Word about the elements of this piece of entertainment about which He has things to say by His Word, not mine. Please remember that a bad influence does not have to be real to influence badly. [1 Cor. 15:33, Prov. 3:31-32] Though indeed a very violent movie [Prov. 13:2, Prov. 3:31], the in-flight actions, which includes the choice of language, is speculation on the part of the filmmakers. No one knows what was done or said except by the recordings and phone calls. Enough said about that. The strongest reasons this film earned a score in the range of scores earned by R-rated films in the comparative baseline database is violence and profanity [Col. 3:8], including many uses of God's name in vain both with and without the four letter expletive. [Deut. 5:11] While abuse of God's name was expensive to the Offense to God investigation area score and ultimately to the final score of 42 out of 100, portrayal of thanking God for evil acts and evil acts "in the name of God" took their toll as well. The listing of observations for this film are available in the Findings/Scoring section. Most of you probably have already lifted up the families of those who were murdered "in the name of God" on September 11, 2001. Please consider another petition of Jesus to give the families an extra measure of peace and strength as their lives yet adjust to the loss. And give thanks for the strength of those who gave definition to "Greater love hath no man..." [John 15:13] by apparently taking action to save lives by laying down their own. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
