UNDERCOVER BROTHER (PG-13) -- Too bad it had to use filth to do it. Distributed by: Imagine Entertainment/Universal Pictures Director(s): Malcolm D. Lee Producer(s): Bill Carraro, Brian Grazer, Mathew Hart, Michael Jenkinson, Damon Lee, John Ridley Written by/Screenplay: John Ridley (Internet series, story, screenplay), Michael McCullers (screenplay) Cinematography/Camera: Tom Priestley Jr. Music: Stanley Clarke, Cheryl Lynn Film Editing: William Kerr Casting: Robi Reed-Humes Production Design: William A. Elliott Art Direction: Elis Y. Lam I cannot remember much about this movie. It has been nine days since I watched it. I will not be able to give you much of a Summary/Commentary, but thankfully a Media Analysis Worksheet is used to record the findings as they are observed so a memory to give you the full accountings of the findings is not required. The listing also serves to jog my memory about the story. Anton Jackson (Eddie Griffin) is Undercover Brother who looks like he stepped out of Soul Train of the 70s: a self-proclaimed champion for Black man's autonomy. It seems the push of the 70s and 80s to reduce and defeat racism had started to wane in the 90s. Now, in the 00s, Black man is back where he was in the 70s -- according to the show. B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. was an organization Jackson bumped into which had a sole purpose of creating disunity between Black and White since everything seemed to have taken on a graytone since the 90s. The guy known as The Chief (Chi McBride) of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. was so impressed with Jackson he gave Jackson a key position in the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. along side (according to IMDB) a White guy, milquetoast fish-out-of-the-water Lance (Neil Patrick Harris - Doogie Howser), Smart Brother (Gary Williams), Conspiracy Brother (David Chappelle) and Sista Girl (Aunjanue Ellis). I do remember somebody, I think it was Lance, calling her "Sister" Girl and was immediately chastised about her name being Sis-TAH Girl. Jackson was given his first B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D undercover assignment of infiltrating Man, an organization headed by The Man (Robert Trumbull) and aided by Mr. Feather (Chris Kattan), bent on ruining the chances of a Black presidential candidate, General Boutwell (Billy Dee Williams) by giving him some sort of chemical concoction that made the General lose his political/military bravado and become a fried chicken Kentucky General. It was so clear the writers were jabbing Gen. Colin Powell that Billy Dee actually looked a little like Powell (who might not be that bad of an idea as a president anyway). There are several spot memories I have about Undercover Brother but none with enough detail to be able to make any sense. But I will say that as a white man I was not offended in the least about this light-hearted jab a both Blacks and Whites in good fun. Too bad it had to use filth to do it. Seventy instances of foul language in 80 minutes, including one use of the most foul of the foul words and a number of instances of changing one letter of a foul word to excuse its use [Col. 3:8]. There was so thick a density of foul language the Impudence/Hate score was zero. There was so much use of firearms to threaten, control and to kill the Wanton Violence/Crime score was zero [Prov. 3:31-32, Hab. 2:12]. And there was so many sexual improprieties, among them were sex talk and comments, requests for sex and sex offers, that the Sex/Homosexuality score was zero [Rev. 21:8]. The listing in the Findings/Scoring section tells it all. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ]. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. *******Food for Daily Thought******* As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth. |
"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our nearly seven years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
