(While the Scriptural references are certainly not subjective, my commentary may be and sometimes is somewhat subjective.)
Production (US): Treasure Blind Distribution - 2008 (US): Cloud Ten Pictures Director(s): Brian Shoop Producer(s): Travis Jones. Sam Rader Writing Credits: Brian Shop Cinematography/Camera: Richard Thompson Music: Jeff Shoop Film Editing: Richard Thompson Production Design: Art Direction: Mark Gullickson Viewed on Cloud Ten Pictures DVD A crotchety old man learns how to be the father he was not. Many years ago, about 30, Cliff Edwards' (Brian Shoop) wife left him. With her she took their infant son, Jack (Joseph Shoop). Cliff did not even get to hold their son. When Jack learned to write, he wrote his father at each birthday. Cliff never answered even one of them. Now, hurricane Katrina apparently took the life of Jack, leaving a young son, Henry (Daniel Brookshire). With Henry's mother and grandmother both dead, Jack's girlfriend took Henry temporarily. Jack's girlfriend was not prepared to keep Henry -- he is blind. As a baby a brain tumor stole Henry's eyesight. Now stands Jack's girlfriend with Henry at the doorstep of his cab driving, treasure hunting grandfather Cliff rudely (maybe desperately) ringing Cliff's doorbell. Cliff is now a grandfather ... for real. Rewind a little. Cliff, who drives a cab for a living, is also a treasure hunter. He has evidence of Confederate gold bullion buried somewhere around Tulsa, OK. With what he believes to be a treasure map from 1865, Cliff spends every spare moment digging and searching for the hidden gold. Now his grandson Henry appears. His blind grandson who has needs that cannot be anticipated by one who has not even been a dad expect by biology is going to need all of his time. What do do? Watch the show and you'll find out. It is not the point of this service to reveal the good features of films and we don't typically do that. We reveal for you the assaults on morality and decency so so you might be in a better position to make an informed moral decision whether a film is fit. We tell you what is there ... you decide. While we give you detailed findings regarding the assaults on morality and decency, if we were to also give you accountings of the positive features of a film (which may present) it would spoil the film. I'll just share with you that treasure does not always come as gold. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 8 out of 100 This is a violent film. There is none of the guts and gore typical of Hollywood but there is more to violence than blood and slashing. The violence and/or crime content of Treasure Blind includes gunfire to kill, double physical assault, assault resulting in unconsciousness, beating injuries with blood and kidnapping of a child. A complete listing of the violence and/or criminal content is provided in the Findings/Scoring section, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model. A note about violence and what God tells us about it. He warns that violence is "catching." [Prov. 16:29] Lo and behold, whether intentional or even knowing it, man has finally become aware of God's wisdom regarding violence and agree with Him. Four professional public health agencies agreed jointly that, among other things, "viewing violence may lead to real life violence." Whether the appropriately "sanitized" violence in this film should be of concern to you, mom/dad, is not our call to make regarding your children. It is your call. We just tell you what is there and what God says about it ... you decide. Impudence/Hate (I) - 62 out of 100 Because of lying, rudeness, animosity, hatred and abandonment of a bound father by his son, this investigation area found enough content for the film to earn PG-equivalent score in this investigation area. [Phil. 4:8] Let not the ways of the world lead you. Sexual Immorality (S) - 96 out of 100 The only instance of sexually immoral behavior in the entire 87 minutes of the show was the off-camera intercourse that brought about Henry. While the resulting child is blessed, having intercourse while not married (or extramarital) is sin. Indeed, God's admonitions about immoral sex can be summed up as any sexual contact (including visual), conduct or activity outside of a monogamous heterosexual marriage. Remember folks, I did not write the Rules. The One who spent three days in Hell so you and I would not have to spend one moment there did. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 No use or possession of illegal drugs, no alcoholic beverages and no tobacco were found. Neither was there any abuse of prescription drugs found. Offense to God (O) - 100 out of 100 Not one time was God's name abused. Neither were there any instances of occultism, witchcraft, sorcery, Satanism, necromancy or the like. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No one was murdered and no one committed suicide. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
