Leonetti Music: John Debney Film Editing: Sam Seig Casting: Rick Montgomery, Kerry Barden, Paul Schnee Production Design: Arlan Jay Vetter Art Direction: Amy Lee Wheeler Viewed on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment DVD I apologize for this analysis report taking so long to post to the website but I had to take a couple weeks to complete rebuilding our database of 1570 analyses. This film is yet another saturation with crude humor and behaviors to challenge sexual purity as well as tons of slapstick violence. It is another case of each assault on morality and decency not being extreme or severe but there being so many of them that the magnitude of the total events of assault make the content of this film equivalent to PG-13 films in the comparative baseline database. Moe (Chris Diamantorpoulos), Larry (Sean Hayes) and Curly (Will Sasso) have grown up in an orphanage operated by Catholic nuns. The trio are now adults but remain at the orphanage as unpaid aides to help maintain the orphanage. One day the Monsignor (Brian Doyle-Murray) informed Mother Superior (Jane Lynch) that unless they can raise $830,000 by the end of the month the orphanage would have to close. Moe, Larry and Curly take it upon themselves to venture away from the orphanage to raise the money. Further detail into the plot and story would belabor this report. Suffice it to say this film is little more than slapstick violence with crude sexual humor that might be causing the original three stooges to turn in their graves. But I will let you know of an after-film scene where the two Farrelly bothers -- the Directors -- tell kids watching that the slapstick violence was all fake and not to try anything in the film. What I wanted to inform you about was that while Bob Farrelly is speaking Peter Farrelly is walking toward a table Bob is standing behind in front of the camera and away from weight-lifting apparatus putting his shirt back on as his pants appeared to be ready to fall down below his public hair line. This begins at 1:25:28. Just thought you might want to know about it before you decide for which age stratum this film is fit. At the risk of subjectively influencing you, I would not let my 13 and 9 year old daughters watch this part. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual content investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model, is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zero out of 100 This film is thick with slapstick violence. Maybe saturated would be a better descriptive. I remember a number of re-runs of the original Three Stooges films but I do not remember the slapstick violence being that thick. There is more to the violence/crime content of this film such as conspiring to commit murder and the use of firearms to control/intimidate. Our Lord has specific things to say about violence. More than 50 verses condemn violence. Proverb 16:29 says it rather succinctly. In Proverb 16:29 God warns that violence is enticing and that violence can lead one into the path that is not good. And He makes no distinction between brutal violence or slapstick. Since God "published His findings" about violence four professional public health agencies published their findings which warn, among other things, that violence in and as entertainment can lead the viewer, especially the young, into real life violence and can desensitize regarding the gravity of violence, leading the viewer to believe violence is an effective means of settling conflict. Impudence/Hate (I) - 35 out of 100 The content regarding impudence and/or hatred includes deceit and lying repeatedly, name-calling repeatedly, abandonment of three babies, a hateful argument and tormenting. [Rom. 12:18] This content investigation area includes the use of profanity which fortunately was absent from the script. Sexual Immorality (S) - 35 out of 100 Nor do I remember from the original Three Stooges the crude sexual and anatomical humor nor the dressing to maximize the female form and/or skin exposure and the excessive cleavage repeatedly. [Eph. 5:4] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 85 out of 100 The only instances of illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco or abuse of prescription drugs were the cigar, the party alcoholic beverages and the two references to alcoholic beverages. Offense to God (O) - 85 out of 100 In addition to the adultery, God's name was abuse twice, both times without the four letter expletive. Note that abusing His name without the four letter expletive does not admonish he who speaks His name in vain, including that popular three-syllable sentence with His name trailing it. God will not hold guiltless anyone who abuses His name. [Deut. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No portrayals of murder or suicide were found. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE --> Children who see a lot of violence are more likely to view violence as an effective way of settling conflicts. Children exposed to violence are more likely to assume the acts of violence are acceptable behavior. --> Viewing violence can lead to emotional desensitization towards violence in real life. It can decease the likelihood that one will take action on behalf of a victim when violence occurs. --> Entertainment violence feeds a perception that the world is a violent and mean place. Viewing violence increases fear of becoming a victim of violence, with a resultant increase in self-protective behavior and a mistrust of others. --> Viewing violence may lead to real life violence. Children exposed to violent programming at a young age have a higher tendency for violent and aggressive behavior later in life than children who are not so exposed. Further, God speaks darkly of violence 56 times in the Old and New Testament of the KJV.] As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |
(The objective heart of the CAP Analysis Model, independent of and insulated from the Summary / Commentary section.) Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zero out of 100 Impudence/Hate (I) - 35 out of 100 Sexual Immorality (S) - 35 out of 100 Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 85 out of 100 Offense to God (O) - 85 out of 100 Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
