(2004), R [R*] -- Rest in peace, America. Cast/Crew Details Courtesy Internet Movie Database Production (US): Paramount Pictures, Scott Rudin Productions Distribution (US): Paramount Pictures Director(s): Trey Parker Producer(s): Frank C. Agnone II, Scott Aversano, Pam Brady, Anne Garefino, Trey Parker, Michael Polaire, Scott Rudin, Matt Stone Written by: Pam Brady, Trey Parker, Matt Stone Cinematography/Camera: Bill Pope Music: Stephen Barton, Toby Chu, Harry Gregson-Williams, Daimen Kaiser, James McKee Smith, Trey Parker Film Editing: Tom Vogt Casting: Mary Hidalgo Production Design: Jim Dultz Art Direction: John Berger Viewed At: Viewed At: Hollywood Theaters South Freeway, Burleson, Texas From the presidential heads of Mount Rushmore with vertically ascending aircraft, the mighty and courageous Team America police the world of dastardly terrorists and terroristic activity. We are safe now that the big and brave lads and lasses of Team America are protecting us from dangerous criminals. Rest in peace, America. Under the direction of Spotswood (voice of Daran Norris), Chris (voice of Matt Stone), Lisa (voice of Kristen Miller), Sarah (voice of Masasa), Joe (voice of Trey Parker) and originally Carson (voice of Trey Parker), replaced by Gary (voice of Trey Parker), Team America battles the dark and sinister elements that wish to destroy the world against our wishes. In a plan masterminded by dictator Kim Jong Il (voice of Trey Parker), the Team battled the sales of weapons of mass destruction to Arab terrorists. From France to the Middle East to Panama, the Team made the world safer each day ... but managed to destroy everything in their path. In a plan to thwart the evil terrorists in their lust to destroy the world, Spotswood enlisted the aid of Broadway actor Gary Johnston (star of a Broadway musical telling everyone they have AIDS) to replace Carson who was killed in Paris. Spotswood needed someone able to act well enough to infiltrate the Arab terrorists. Because of his superb acting ability, Gary was successful at garnering camaraderie with the Arabs and was instrumental in enabling a crunching victory over the terrorists. But Gary later found that all the ensuing destruction was on the wrong people. Gary is beside himself in grief and team psychologist Lisa, previous girlfriend of Carson, takes Gary into her embrace ... sexually, very sexually. After learning through the super-computer, I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E that it was indeed not the Arab terrorists who were behind the plot to destroy the world but instead was Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, Spotswood redirected Team efforts to end the reign of Kim Jong Il. Heavy with carnage and with strings attached, this irreverent film which garnered critical acclaim with only 20 minutes of the unfinished film at the Toronto International Film Festival mocks many: Michael Moore; Alec Baldwin; "gays"; Asians; Arabs; Susan Sarandon; George Clooney; all leftist actors/actresses. Stone and Parker even manage to insert an offensive acronym by changing the name of the Screen Actor's Guild to the Film Actor's Guild. Stone and Parker even lampoon UN weapons inspector Hans Blix (voice of Trey Parker) who gets eaten by a shark for doing his job ... with an attitude. Mimicking the TV show Thunderbirds of the 60s, shot entirely with puppets except for two cats which serve as panthers which eat someone, Team America mocks action films. And it, of course, insults Jesus with a few exceptionally vulgar expressions using His name. Though the characters were puppets, someone had to actually speak those words. If the projection of this film is anti-left, it makes no sense why Stone and Parker had to throw vulgarity at Jesus. As was in South Park: BLU there is much vulgarity in this film. In one scene Spotswood demands a demonstration of loyalty from Gary by forcing Gary to prove his loyalty by performing oral sex on him. While no "genitals" were seen, it was vulgar enough that "genitals" would probably not have made it any more vulgar. Another scene involved numerous positions of sexual intercourse with full nudity between two fairly anatomically correct puppets. While gender-specific anatomy was absent from Gary, it was present on Lisa. In another scene, Gary experiences an episode of vomiting clearly exaggerated for effect after drinking himself into a stupor. I momentarily thought the exaggerated vomiting scene was put there for the "benefit" of the CAP Ministry since 1) we have apparently built a name for ourselves in Hollywood, at least that is what we are told, 2) several email attacks of our analysis of South Park: BLU flamed us for including vomiting in the listing of findings and 3) since the CAP Ministry is an enemy of many South Park: BLU lovers and apparently of Stone and Parker, the exaggerated vomiting scene made me wonder whether this second excessively exaggerated scene was just to express recognition of the CAP service. By the viciousness and vulgarity of the email attacks, I would almost believe this to be true ... Nah! Not a chance. Why would a megabuck pair of Hollywood cinematic whiz kids take notice of a church mouse poor grassroots ministry? That we beat Harvard University to the punch by a full four years in proving the "ratings creep" of the MPAA wouldn't matter now would it? I would like, however, to make another observation but of the technical expertise and attention to detail in miniaturization. In my experience, the miniaturization in Team America has not been equaled. Ever. Not even the mega-productions of the early Japanese Godzilla films could match the quality of the Team America miniaturization. Too bad such top-notch, standard-setting skills were used on such vulgarity. The Wanton Violence/Crime (W) investigation area revealed much violence: terrorist activity; terrorist suppression; blood and gore; gunfire killing; disaster deaths; body mutilations. [Prov. 3:31-32, Phil. 4:8] The Impudence/Hate (I) investigation area found 123 uses of some form of profanity and racial/ethnic disrespect. [2 Tim. 2:16 - 17, Col. 3:8, Prov. 8:13] The Sexual Immorality (S) investigation area found, in addition to the multiple positions of intercourse with nudity, several very vulgar comments, references and insults, many of which were directed at the chosen practice of homosexuality; requests for sex, both oral and coital; oral sex (homosexual); crude humor. [Eph. 5:4, Mark 7:21, Rev. 21:8] The Drugs/Alcohol (D) investigation area revealed much display of booze; drinking; bars; ' smoking; drunkenness. [Eph. 5:18] The Offense to God (O) investigation area found multiple uses of God's name in vain both with and without the four letter expletive [Deut. 5:11]; exceptionally vulgar use of Jesus' name. [Gal. 6:7] The Murder/Suicide (M) investigation area found only four instances of obvious murder. Deaths due to combat/warfare are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime. [Gal. 5:21] Following as a convenience to all they who clamored for an analysis of Team America for comparison to South Park: BLU is a scoring comparative for the two films. The listing in the Findings/Scoring section will provide a complete listing of all that was noted. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
