It is now August 27, 2007. Again I apologize that I could not get this to you in a timely manner. At least this report is available to you before Surf's Up comes out on video October 9, 2007. To be able to improve timeliness of services it will take enough funding and financial support, all of which is tax-deductible, to operate this 501(c)(3) licensed Christian ministry as a fulltime, dedicated ministry. Indeed, if such funding/support becomes available we will be able to get many film analyses to you before their scheduled opening day since I get invitations to private screenings almost weekly. But with the screenings being 90 miles away, the ministry cannot now afford to send me. More on all this if you want to know. Young Cody Maverick (voice of Shia LaBeouf) of Shiverpool, Antarctica swears he is going to be like master surfer Zeke "Big Z" Topanga (voice of Jeff Bridges) in spite of the warnings of his mother, Edna (voice of Dana Belben) and brother, Glen (voice of Brian Posehn). Cody is one of the "Let me be me" teens who feels that being himself is okay no matter the expense to others, never thinking that it is "me" that might need to change. There is no rule that says everyone else has to change for "let me to be me" to be "me." "Me" gets into trouble because of his "let me be me" attitude. [Ps. 7:16] But then, the "Gotta see for myself" syndrome raises its ugly head. [Prov. 22:15] This humanistic "me first" attitude is indeed against that which Jesus would like for us. [Mark 9:33 - 35] Wanton Violence/Crime (W) The most severe loss of points due to content was found by this investigation area, so much so the magnitude of the content revealed by this investigation area is indeed equivalent to some "lite" R-rated films. Though most of the violence was of the Road Runner/Coyote (tm) caliber some of it might be a tad more intense, particularly the cannibalism. Repeatedly. And it is that "repeatedly" that made the violence envelope so harsh, not in individual examples of violence but because of so many of them. Impudence/Hate (I) It's a "kid's show." It absolutely must have some flatulence, body fluid "humor" and child arrogance at parents. At least "kid's show" filmmakers seem to think so. Unsportsmanlike conduct and bully tactics in and as entertainment may teach aberrant behavior choices when like situations turn up in the lives of your children ... and like situations will turn up from time to time. Remember, teaching by using bad behavior as an example of not how to behave can and sometimes does teach how to not behave. [1 Cor. 15:33, 1Cor. 11:1, Titus 2:7] And let us take heed of God's Wisdom as He told us about the small things (such as the seemingly innocuous bad behaviors in and as entertainment) that can change our behavior mechanics ... bit by bit. [James 3:4] The small but noble and good things we do before our children will help them build a solid moral foundation: small and noble things such as returning the excess when the store clerk gives us too much change; obeying the speed limit; giving that $5 bill you found to lost-n-found; saying "No" to what you feel is an unacceptable movie. On a positive note, there was not one use of the three/four letter word vocabulary found in the entire 77 minutes of the film Sexual Immorality (S) As usual, Hollywood seems to depend heavily on sexual innuendo and inferences to be able to write a movie, even if it is seemingly innocuous intentionally choreographed attention to the privates, sensuously placed tattoos, anatomical insults and humor, etc. [Eph. 5:4] Drugs/Alcohol (D) There were no noted uses of or references to alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription abuse in the show. Offense to God (O) There were only two uses of Jesus' name in vain. God, who is Jesus who is God, is quite serious about using His name in vain. Deut. 5:11 tells us all about it. Murder/Suicide (M) There were no murders or suicides noted. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
