(While the Scriptural references are certainly not subjective, my commentary may be and sometimes is somewhat subjective.)

I haven't completed the number crunching yet but if I were a betting man I could easily bet this Stay Alive is another R-13 . . . Toldyaso. Due to content, Stay Alive earned a final score of 17 out of 100. Very few of the hundreds of PG-13 movies we have analyzed have earned scores that low. Most R-rated films do not earn final scores that low. It is not possible to say the abysmal score was "due mainly to..." If I did I would have to say "due mainly to violence, gore, profanity, sexual immorality including intercourse, God's name in vain with the four letter expletive, evil/unholy things and behaviors and murder with bloody gore." Of the six CAP investigation areas, only the content revealed by the Drugs/Alcohol investigation area earned a PG-13 score. The content revealed by all the five other investigation areas earned R-rated scores, mostly zero as shown in the CAP thermometers. Do you really want your 13 year olds to watch such "entertainment", mom/dad? Do you really want to watch it? The gist of the film is that anyone who "dies" in an evil unlicensed beta video game dies in "real life." In the same manner. Even in the same position. That is really all that needs to be said about this foul-fest film with more producers than cast, "approved" for young teens so sayeth the MPAA. I will not spend valuable time discussing the plot any further. The cast includes Jon Foster as Hutch MacNeil, Samaire Armstrong as Abigail, Frankie Muniz as Swink Sylvania, Sophia Bush as October Bantum, Jimmi Simpson as Phineus Bantum, Adam Goldberg as Miller and Milo Ventimiglia as Loomis Crowley. In this film witchcraft is presented as a viable defense against evil and is a strong presence throughout the film. Speaking an incantation is given the power to cause death. [James 1:21, Rev. 22:14-15, Deut. 18:10 - 12] Profanity, including a single use of the most foul of the foul words, averages once every two minutes. God's name is used with the four letter expletive nine times and without it 13 times. [Deut. 5:11] The depths of sexual immorality to which this film for your middle school children is permitted to reach includes intercourse. Though no genitals are seen skin which is not normally seen is, and it shows him atop her in bed together. [Gal. 5:19] There is so much more to the ignominious content of this film. Though I rarely make recommendations, I implore that you please scrutinize the listing in the Findings/Scoring section before you consider your family watching this clearly hardcore R-equivalent film. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

Christian Educators Association International |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
