An age-old expression that used to be connected with the purity of wholesome marriage. Not 'ny more. Now marriage hopefuls are borrowing their friends' girlfriend or boyfriend for immoral sex ... in addition to having immoral premarital sex with their own boyfriend/girlfriend. The participants have truly become slaves to the modern mores about immoral sex - that sex is about as significant as a three-day old doughnut or getting some on your chin when you blow your nose. There is nothing pure about this film. Something Borrowed is no more than enmity toward and contempt for sexual responsibility, humility and the purity of the marriage bed. Something Borrowed is best described as an exercise in how many ways Hebrews 13:4 (and a plethora of other verses) can be violated. And it is provided free of consequences to your 13 year old kids. Hollywood continues to promote the idea that sex is love, not understanding that sex is not love and love is not sex: that sex is a tool of love, nothing more, nothing less; that deep and rich love is quite possible without any sex at all. Lawyer Rachel White (Ginnifer Goodwin) met lawyer Dexter Thaler III (Colin Egglesfield) in college and was smitten by him. And he with her. Letting the relationship fade, six years later Dexter again runs into Rachel who introduces him to her BFFL, Darcy Rhone (Kate Hudson). Dexter and Darcy seem to hit it off and eventually plan to get married (after living together, of course). But one night on a date with his betrothed, Darcy, Dexter gallantly offers to take Rachel home ... and ends up in Rachel's bed with her. And Rachel's professional associate, Ethan (John Krasinski) is slowly getting his heart ripped out as Rachel pursues her satisfaction, er, satisfactions. I am not going to take any more time to provide a summary of the story. It is all the same -- someone is getting in bed or is trying to get in bed with someone. Repeatedly. With a scoring distribution such as that earned by the content of this film -- 78, Zero, Zero, Zero, Zero, 100 -- it cannot be anything but another R-13. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual CAP investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 78 out of 100 The major violence content of this film comes as a background video: w woman is being murdered then murdered by gunfire. Rachel hits Ethan with a badminton racket and Dex ignores traffic laws. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Someone utters profanity 22 times. [Col. 3:8, Eph: 4:29] Darcy screams "I HATE YOU" at Rachel a number of times. [Rom. 12:18, Col. 3:8] Sexual Immorality (S) - Zero out of 100 There are far too many line items of sexual immorality in this film to even try to summarize them briefly here. Please look to the listing in the Findings section for a complete accounting of the sexually immoral content of this film. [1 Thess. 4:1 - 7] I will mention ex-president [fortunately] Bill Clinton's lingering influence by Darcy stating "It was just sex." Drugs/Alcohol (D) - Zero out of 100 This PG-13 film, being targeted at our youth by the 'teen-approved' label of "PG-13", is a serious risk for our youth. Not only because of the flagrant acceptance of sexual irresponsibility but because of the dangers associated with exposing youth to drinking and drunkenness in and as entertainment which saturate this film as much as in many R-rated films. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was There is nothing to say that smoking in and as entertainment does not carry the same danger of influence as drinking. Actually, the same matter of behavior influence applies to any behavior demonstrated in and as entertainment, including good behavior. Offense to God (O) - Zero out of 100 It seems that the favorite expression of Snyder or Emily Griffin is the three-syllable sentence with God's name trailing it. Forty-four times someone uses God's name in vain [Deut. 5:11], 43 times without the four letter expletive and once with it. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There are no murders or suicides in the entire 107.5 minutes of the show. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
