One nightmare led Sharon to sleep walk to the edge of a cliff. Sharon's father believes that medication, psychiatry and hospitalization will help her overcome her nightmares and somnambulism. But mom differs. Mom thinks what will help is a visit to the location in Sharon's nightmares - the old abandoned mining town of Silent Hill, Taluca County. Rose decides to take Sharon to Silent Hill but is involved in a car wreck along the way. Rose swerved to avoid hitting a girl who ran in front of her. When Rose regains consciousness as Brahams police officer Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden) arrives, Sharon is gone. Rose is not willing to remain under non custodial arrest and speeds off to get to Silent Hill in search of Sharon. Silent Hill has been abandoned for 30 years. The coal mine under it caught fire and has been burning since. The town is enveloped in a fog of falling ash. The way the story oozes into a child-centered plot makes one think there might have been a massive fire in Silent Hill which killed many children and that the ash falling is from 30 years ago. Silent Hill is an eerie town of decrepit and run-down buildings still standing and usable, but one can almost smell the pong of dank and musty air. As Rose continues her search for Sharon, what is left of the town inhabitants make themselves known. Some of the inhabitants Rose greets are dead - walking dead. They all live - er - exist in the twilight caused by the ever present fog of falling ash and periods of strange darkness. It is during the periods of darkness the town becomes alive with the dead, the not-so-dead and the living, at least what appears to be living. Maybe it is Borg(tm) living. The Borg Queen of Star Trek: First Contact, Alice Krige is Christabella, "queen of the undead" in this film. While the film utters fewer profane words and displays less sexually oriented behaviors than might be expected of an R-rated film, it takes up the slack in gore, violence and unholy matters. This film presents such violence as slowly cooking a woman with heat from flames, a woman being ripped apart as her niece dances in the rain of blood from her body halves and human incineration. [1 Cor. 15:33] The foul language is bad enough with almost a 50-50 mix of three/four letter words and the most foul of the foul words. [2 Tim. 2:16 - 17] But the unholy content of this film numerically exceeds the assaults of foul language by leaps and bounds. So many times the "queen of the dead" and others abuse Scriptural and faith doctrines to excuse their "witch hunt" activities and thus make a mockery of God and His Word. [Gal. 6:7, Heb. 10:29] If you should consider renting this film (I say renting since it has taken us so long to get this report out that the film is no longer showing at theaters), please consider strongly the listing of findings in the Findings/Scoring section of this report. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

Christian Educators Association International |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
