Sanders Art Direction: Sarah Boardman, Naaman Marshall Viewed on Walt Disney Home Entertainment DVD Using the same analysis model governed by the same equations and investigation standards and methodology used on more than 1300 films now, with a final score of 95 out of 100 Secretariat earned a solid place among the group of films in our comparative baseline database that earned G-equivalent final scores. That makes Secretariat a High G-PG, meaning a PG-rated film earning a final score in the high end of the range of scores earned by G-rated films in the comparative baseline database. I cannot imagine how the MPAA gave this film a PG because of "brief mild language" which is three uses of profanity when G-rated films have contained more. Also, the MPAA gave Takers a PG-13 rating with the tag stating "some language" while Takers presented 153 uses of profanity. So, "mild brief language" can be three uses of profanity but "some language" can be 153 uses? Maybe the PG is for the gambling since the whole film was based on horse racing? I doubt it. I rather suspect the PG was given to Secretariat probably because of the Christian elements in the film, including Christmas and Jesus in song, i.e., "Oh, Happy Days." The film even starts out with telling us a story of Job arguing with God 4000 years ago. The MPAA apparently has to do what they can to keep them kids away from Jesus, huh? Well, a PG will not likely keep many kid as away from this film but it's a stab at limiting attendance. This is a movie of the story of Penny Tweedy (Diane Lane), owner of what is claimed to be the finest racehorse that ever lived, Secretariat, coming up through the horse training industry. When Penny's mother died, Penny decided she must take the reins of her father's, Christopher Chenery's (Scott Glenn) horse training farm. Against all odds, Penny rebuilt the Chenery farm. As time and projects progressed in Penny's fight to save the farm and ultimately the family's financial health, Penny Tweedy became known in the area of the farm as the daughter of Chris Chenery, Penny Chenery instead of Penny Tweedy, which brings up another level to the story. The story is also about the support of Penny's family. While her husband Jack (Dylan Walsh) became uncomfortable and even verbally combative with Penny spending so much time trying to save the farm, he was there to support Penny through it all. One might believe that is backwards with the Bible which says that the wife is to support the husband: that the wife is subject to her husband [Eph. 5:23]. Well, the Bible also says the husband is to support the wife. [1 Cor. 7:3, 1 Pet. 3:7] Don't ever think, husbands, that "head of the wife" means boss. Neither is the wife to be independent of the husband. Secretariat earned a final score of 96 which places it squarely in the high end of the range of scores earned by G-rated films (87 to 100 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database, giving this film a lite G-equivalence. The lowest investigation area score (Impudence/Hate) is 86 out of 100 because of the three uses of profanity and the one instance of a horse urinating on a man. If one of those 3 uses of profanity or the horse urinating on a man were left out, the Impudence/Hate investigation area score would have been higher than 86 which would have given the film a green CAPCon Alert light. But, alas, because of the score of 86 the film earned a yellow CAPCon Alert light. Secretariat a long story of the attainment of the Triple Crown by Secretariat and of the contributions by many. That there may have been some immoral or sinful deeds along the way does not excuse demonstration of them in and as entertainment nor perpetuating them by example nor the emboldening of doing likewise. As few as they are, the following individual investigation area findings present discussions of the findings. The listings in the Findings/Scoring section provide itemized details of the findings. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 97 out of 100 The only instance of anything that remotely touches violence is a still photo of a racing injury to Secretariat's jockey, Ronnie Turcotte (Otto Thorwarth) who may have been as vital to Secretariat's success as Penny. Impudence/Hate (I) - 83 out of 100 Three uses of profanity plus two uses of a euphemism of human anatomy plus a horse urinating on a human are all that were found by this investigation area. [Col. 3:8] Sexual Immorality (S) - 100 out of 100 There were not even innuendo let alone display of anything even remotely associated with sexual immorality. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 No use, consumption or even possession of alcoholic beverages or tobacco were noted nor were there any abuses of prescription drugs. Offense to God (O) - 88 out of 100 Only once did anyone abuse God's name. And that was Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), Secretariat's trainer. And it was without the four letter expletive. [Deut. 5:11] Horse racing is built by gambling, i.e., betting on the ponies. Indeed the purse of the winner is filled by gambling. The pockets of the winning gamblers are filled by gambling. The facilities are built with funds spent by they who come to gamble. Though there was nothing said about gambling in the entire 115 minutes of the film, gambling cannot be rightfully separated from horse racing, the very theme of this film. Therefore, gambling must be and has been incorporated into the scoring. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders. No suicides. None. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
