That is about the best phrase I can think of that describes the content of Scott Pilgrim vs the World. But that is just my opinion. If there is a latent desire of the human identity to feed some crude and concupiscent hunger or some need to at least mentally participate in licentious behavior, this film might do it. Be that as it may ... This film earned a final score of 27 out of 100. R-rated films in the developmental comparative baseline database earned final scores of 54 and below out of 100. You do the math. This is a hardcore R-13 film. In terms of violence, the film earned a score of zero out of 100 in Wanton Violence/Crime. In terms of profanity, crude/rude behavior and lying (Impudence/Hate) the film earned a zero out of 100 score. In terms of Sexual Immorality, the film earned a score of zero out of 100. And so on. Over the years I have found our readers are quite capable of gathering the meanings displayed by the CAP thermometers. Scott (Michael Cera) is a 22 year old nerdy type who is dating 17 year old high school girl, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong) who loves his Sex Bob-ombs band. But deep down inside Scott still loves his high school sweetheart, Envy Adams, a.k.a. Natalie (Brie Larson of Hoot).who has also become a member of a band. But along comes Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) for whom Scott is experiencing a strong attraction even though Scott's sister, Stacey (Anna Kendrick) advises otherwise. Little does Scott know that along with Ramona comes the Seven Exes whom Scott must defeat before he can have Ramona. Note that a few of the performers in this film have fame from other films such as Anna being Jessica in two of the three Twilight films and the Twilight installment yet to come. Ramona is also Gwen/Royal Pain from Sky High. I am surprised that such experienced and talented performers would get connected with this caliber of "entertainment." But as William Shatner, the Captain Kirk of Star Trek fame once said, "There's no accounting for taste." Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zeero out of 100 Violence content appears mainly as evil super powers. Some "video game" gore appears as the head of one of the characters is blown off its body. Physical fighting and beatings are clearly beyond what the human body can take. All of it is clearly fantasy but that does not excuse the violence of it. Once the world thought that if violence is clearly fantasy that its counterproductive and corruptive influence is negated. But such is not true. Any form or extent of violence, even in and as entertainment, can influence and indeed has influenced observers into aggression, especially youth. So sayeth God [Prov. 16:29] and so sayeth four professional American health agencies. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Forty-one times someone utters profanity of some sort. In a long sequence Winstead utters 12 masked uses of the most foul of the foul words. Though masked they still cause the word to form in the mind of the one who hears them and thus does not absolve the utterer of the sin of speaking filthy communication [Col. 3:8]. So, abbreviating, distorting or any other form of attempts to mask use of profanity does not negate the sin of doing so. Not even quoting. Sexual Immorality (S) - Zero out of 100 Scott Pilgrim vs the World is about half-n-half between heterosexual and homosexual. One of the Sex Bob-omgs is gay and freely flaunts it to the point of having a male partner in his bed with a male to male kiss. I know it is politically incorrect and even illegal in some societies to speak out against the practice of homosexuality but "society" does not determine whether a chosen behavior is sinful. God does. And God clearly declares the practice of homosexuality to be a sin as much as any sexual contact (including visual), conduct or activity outside of a monogamous heterosexual marriage. [1 Cor. 6:9-10] Y'see, God spent three days in Hell so you and I would not have to spend one moment there. No one in society has done that for us. Note that I said "chosen behavior" above regarding the practice of homosexuality. Yes, the practice of homosexuality is a chosen behavior. Each and every single non-autonomous movement of the human body is a choice. No exceptions. No debate. And practicing homosexuality is not innate, no one is "born that way." Even the grad school scientist who claimed to have found a "gay" gene has been proven to be not only a poor scientist but a liar as well. I suppose some are born with what is called same-sex attraction. I have never experienced it and cannot speak to it. But I can say that having same-sex attraction does not make one "gay." Acting on it does ... which fortifies the fact that practicing homosexuality (and immoral heterosexuality ) is a choice. And, NO, God does NOT hate "fags." God hates no one. He hates some of the things we choose to do but He does not hate us. Neither may we hate "fags." We must do what we can compassionately and gently help the victim of bondage to sin escape such bondage (even our ourseves and our own) but we must not hate they who choose to practice homosexuality. We must love them enough to tell them the Truth. Even ourselves. The rest of the sexual content includes making out, innuendo regarding intercourse and anatomical references. the listing in the Findings/Scoring section provides the details. [Col. 2:20 - 3:6, 1 Ths. 4:1-5] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 57 out of 100 Drinking. A drinking party. Bars. Booze. Drunkenness. It's all there. For your 13 year old children. The American College of Physicians has a warning for you. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was Offense to God (O) - 7 out of 100 Nineteen times someone abused God's name. God does not like that. [Deut.5:11] In addition, characters are portrayed as exercising evil powers. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There were no murders or suicides noted. There were extensive fantasy killings where the victims broke up into little pieces (which were incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime as "exaggerated fantasy violence") thus emulating video games, but no murders or suicides. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
