Thankfully I find that the name "Beezus" was portrayed as the best a toddler could say "Beatrice." Rather clever of the writers, dontchaknow. Ramona (Joey King) is a nine year and three month little girl with a propensity to get into trouble .... or to cause trouble. We've never met one of those kids, have we? Beezus is her big sister, Beatrice (Selena Gomez). Both are the daughters of Robert (John Corbett) and Dorothy (Bridget Moynahan) Quimby. With Robert as vice president of a company, the family are enjoying a comfortable life with occasional upheavals à la Ramona. And à la downsizing. Chief confidante for Ramona is Aunt Bea (Ginnifer Goodwin, not Frances Bavier of Andy Griffith fame - no one will ever replace Frances Bavier as Aunt Bea). Aunt Beatrice still has a flame burning from a questionable relationship with Hobart Kemp (Josh Duhmel), her high school sweetheart who, after ten years, is still secretly in love with her and has come back to Klickitat Street not to restore his old jeep as he claims but rather to try to rekindle the old flame in Aunt Bea. This is a delightful film with several subplots that serve the master plot well. Aside from a few stabs at challenging moral wholesomeness, it is a pleasant journey into the life of suburbia. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 93 out of 100 The only matters that touch on violence are the instance of an adult encouraging mischief and some action violence involving a kitchen fire. Impudence/Hate (I) - 80 out of 100 The most of the items of programming that caused point loss were behaviors applicable to this investigation area: deceiving of parents; a child believing she was cussing; sister brutality; allowing a nine year old to traipse out into the world alone; a teen saying "I hate my life. I wanna die!" and a few more shown in the listing in the Findings/Scoring section. [Rom. 12:18] Sexual Immorality (S) - 97 out of 100 If Hobart had not tried to brush off the backside of Aunt Bea, this investigation area would have found nothing of the sexual nature. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 97 out of 100 One time the family celebrated Robert finding a job with what appeared to be champagne. Offense to God (O) - 100 out of 100 Nothing at all was found that would be applicable to this investigation area. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 Ditto. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
