First, I am sorry this is so late. I could have had it ready and published the morning of opening day. But, in addition to the increasing delays caused by lack of funds enough to dedicate myself to the ministry, my computer is locking up a lot lately. It takes a lot longer to prepare a report which needs five applications when one can no longer use more than one at a time. And then questionably.

When I got home after viewing *Poseidon* (2006) while giving Angela her early AM feeding and breathing treatment I noticed *The Poseidon Adventure* (1972), TV-PG, with Gene Hackman, Earnest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Roddy McDowell, Red Buttons, Stella Stevens and Pamela Sue Martin was on the AMC channel. Imagine that. By that opportunity I am able to mix with this Summary Commentary on the 2006 version a few points of comparison with the 1972 version.

Ex-NYC Mayor and firefighter father with daughter pair, Robert Ramsey (Kurt Russell) and Jennifer (Emmy Rossum) are thrown into a discussion of morality as daddy walked in on Jennifer and fiance, Christian (Mike Vogel) as set on the couch in the Ramsey quarters on the Poseidon. Chris was stroking the underside of Jennifer's thigh with her legs over his facing him ... she in a skirt. Jennifer explains to her father while his blood drips off the hilt of her verbal knife that there are a million places on the Poseidon they could do the deed and that it is essentially none of his business if they do (which sounded more like *when* they do than *if* they do). Now the obligatory requirement for cinematic child arrogance against parental authority *and* sexual arrogance against wholesome moral standards are met.

Also met is the seemingly modern obligatory portrayal of homosexuality to the PG-13 age stratum. One of the passengers, Richard Nelson (Richard Dreyfuss) begs his cell phone listener who, by Nelson's words sounds to be his wife, has left him for another. Nelson begged the listener to call him at the New Year's moment of midnight ... just for old time's sake. When his "wife" does not call at midnight, Nelson pines over the loss of him -- yes, him. The loss throws Nelson to the brink of suicide, which itself is reported to have a more-urban-legend-than-fact association with practicing homosexuality. See Bias Information on Gay-Teen Suicide Keeps Truth from Youth. Though Nelson is not a teen, the report by Dr. Throckmorton speaks to the false notion that they who choose to practice homosexuality have a higher tendency of suicide than heterosexuals. In the 1976 version there was no mention, inference or suggestion of homosexuality noted.

Josh Lucas as Dylan Johns, a professional gambler. Lucas replaces Red Buttons of the 1972 version and is much younger than Buttons. Further, Lucas is a womanizer while there were none in the 1972 version. Maggie James (Jacinda Barrett), mother of young Conner (Jimmy Bennett) is the focus of Johns' womanizing.

As all this is going on, a tremendous wave is on its way to swamp the Poseidon. The plot and story of the 2006 version is nearly a carbon copy of the 1972 version so there is little need to discuss the plot/story. Other changes from the 1972 version are about the same caliber as the changes noted above ... the 2006 version being more extreme than the 1972 version.

The majesty of the film is not in the roles of the characters but is in the cinematography. It is hard to imagine the degree of attention to detail that would be necessary to build an accurate set portraying everything upside down. Peterson does a good job of it. He was even accurate in the portrayal of the tornadic rush of air through the escape hatch as the overturned ship filled with water. But I am not so sure of his accuracy when he had the characters speaking of the wave being a "rouge wave" that swamped the ship, implying that it is a single wave that just happens. Waves of such magnitude are certainly caused by undersea/coastal volcanic and earthquake activity. But one just happening? I am not sanguine about that. It's a movie.

What I saw of the 1972 version was not nearly as violent or gory as the counterpart choreography in the 2006 version. Probably because of the limitations of technology of 1972. But this is yet another example of what I have been preaching for some time: "We have become so drugged by the narcotics of extremes in and as entertainment that what once was morally unacceptable has become morally invisible." [Ps. 12:8]

While the 2006 version centered its obligatory PG-13 female skin footage around cleavage, what I saw of the 1972 version, believe it or not, appeared to have more leg skin than the 2006 version has cleavage. The three women of the escaping group in the 1972 version were each wearing quite short outfits. If this imagery was not simply to show female skin, why were the men fully covered all the time? And to add to the sexuality of the 2006 version, one of the quintessential escaping women, Elena Gonzalez (Mía Maestro) "bunked" (unseen) with a galley crewman in exchange for passage. These portrayals of sexually-oriented programming in the 2006 version were in addition to Jennifer's disrespect of her father in defense of her sexually immoral standards. Granted, Jennifer and Chris were going to get married, but they weren't at the time. And Rossum and Vogel were not married nor were they going to be (not that marriage excuses such a display to the public).

The 1972 version appeared to have even more profanity than the 2006 version but avoided the uses of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive found in the 2006 version.

Finally, the little boy (Conner in the 2006 version) was not the one stranded "under" a table bolted to the dining room floor. In the 2006 version, it was his sister. The galley crewman (McDowell) who was part of the group in the 1972 version was not murdered to save others. I didn't watch enough of the 1972 version to find out whether anyone committed sacrificial suicide as was presented in the 2006 version.

One more thing. In the 1972 version, there was none of a child's disrespect of a parent. Maybe I'll rent the 1972 version and conduct a qualified comparative of the two versions.

The strongest reason this 2006 version of *Poseidon* is R-13 is due to the intense violence in the film found by the Wanton Violence/Crime (W) investigation area. I would not have believed filmmakers could have gotten so much violence of so many kinds into 88 minutes and still have a story. [Prov. 16:29]

Coming in as a close second is Drugs/Alcohol (D). It is a film centered around New Year's Eve, but New Year's Eve does not minimize or eliminate the influence of alcoholic beverages and drunkenness in and as entertainment. This film is rated PG-13 which entices the target group of a recent study regarding the influence of booze in and as entertainment. For more information, please visit the link in the application of Eph. 5:18 below.

Third in scoring loss was the content found by the Offense to God (O) investigation area. There were a large number of the uses of God's name in vain both with and without the four letter expletive. [Deut. 5:11]

Fourth in scoring loss was the content found by the Impudence/Hate (I) investigation area. Seven uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary plus a muffled speaking of the most foul of the foul words were expensive to the scoring, [Col. 3:8]

Fifth in scoring loss was due to the content found by the Sexual Immorality (S) investigation area. Most of the loss was due to the frequent excessive cleavage, the inappropriate touch of a girl by a boy and other matters of sexual orientation, including the "gay" inference. I would like to share with everyone that all of God's admonitions regarding sexual behaviors may be summed up as *any* sexual contact (including visual), conduct or activity outside of a monogamous, heterosexual marriage is sinful. [1Ths. 4:1-5, 1 Cor. 6:9-10]

Finally, the content found by Murder/Suicide (M) suffered the least scoring loss with only one murder and one [sacrificial] suicide.

Since the plot/story of both the 1972 and this 2006 versions are essentially the same, there is no need to go into any great detail of this 2006 version. But I implore that you inspect the listing in the Findings/Scoring section of this report *before* making a decision as to for what age stratum of your family, if any, this film might be fit. It is your decision. We tell you what is there. In great detail. You decide.

CHAPTER/VERSE

  • Prov. 16:29 A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path that is not good. ["A violent man" can be a man (or woman) OR the behavior on the screen, too. Now you know why violence, especially in and as entertainment, can embolden the viewer into aggression, especially youth. See also "Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on Children Congressional Public Health Summit" . And see 1 Cor. 15:33 below.]
  • Eph. 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. ["Wine" can be any intoxicating substance including illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs. This issue is do not get intoxicated. Though it is not a sin to drink, it is a sin to get drunk OR to influence to get drunk or to drink in defiance such as underage drinking. A study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) has found an undeniable link between the presentation of alcoholic beverages and tobacco in and as entertainment and abuse of them and arrogance/defiance with them by adolescents. And teaching/causing youth to abuse alcohol/tobacco (or drugs) by emboldening youth with them in and as entertainment invokes Luke 17:2. If alcoholic beverages in entertainment were not a problem for our young, why is there and why has there been such a push to get and keep booze commercials off prime time broadcast TV? Even the University of Connecticut corroborates the ACP finding.]
  • Deut. 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [Vain is shav' {shawv}: emptiness, nothingness, vanity, such as an expletive. With or without the four letter expletive, the use of God's name in any way other than respect, reverence or thoughtful discussion is in vain. That includes the popular three syllable sentence with His name trailing it AND the misuse of Jesus' name.
  • Col. 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
  • 1Ths. 4:1-5 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his [or her] own body [which includes control of drives, touching, seeking, lusting (even after images), promiscuity, etc.] in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; [Be master of your body and urges, not a slave to them.]
  • 1 Cor. 6:9-10 Know ye not that the [unforgiven] unrighteous [adikos: one who violates or has violated justice] shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: - neither fornicators [pornos: a man who prostitutes his body to another's lust for hire, a male prostitute, a man who indulges in immoral sexual intercourse], - nor idolaters [eidololatres: a worshiper of false gods, even mammom (wealth, riches)], - nor adulterers, - nor effeminate [malakos: he who keeps a boy kept for homosexual relations (such as the North American Man-boy Love Association - NAMBLA); a male who submits his body to unnatural lewdness; a male prostitute], - nor abusers of themselves with mankind [arsenokoites: one who lies with a male as with a female, sodomite, homosexual], - Nor thieves, nor covetous [pleonektes: one eager to have more, esp. what belongs to others], - nor drunkards, - nor revilers, - nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences and present it to younger and younger audiences every year] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, pay for it, enjoy it, want it, submit to it. I call attention to Ps. 12:8 to warn of the creeping desensitizing power of "entertainment."]
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
  • Rom. 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
  • Jude 1:4 For there are certain men* crept in unawares [secretly slipped in among us], who were before of old ordained to this condemnation [whose condemnation was written about long ago], ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness [a license for immorality], and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
  • Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. [Offend: skandalizo {skan-dal-id'-zo} - scandalize; to entice to sin; to cause a person to begin to distrust and desert one whom he ought to trust and obey; to cause to fall away.]
  • Ps. 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me [let no sin rule over me].
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. ["Evil" includes all things that are sinful.]

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
