HBO COMEDY HALF HOUR "PATTON OSWALT" 12/8/97 (NR) -- saturated with foul language and vulgar "humor."

This analysis was a special request analysis of a Home Box Office(tm) presentation of Patton Oswalt, December 8, 1997. A family's 16 year old child was developing a strong interest in Patton Oswalt. They asked that I prepare a CAP analysis of this example of his work provided by them. Following is what I found.

Oswalt performed a stand-up comedy routine involving several matters of life issues in comedy. The program opens with Oswalt and some friends in a bar/restaurant talking about Oswalt's history, how it was for the most part unsatisfactory. Moving to Barry's Bohemian in San Francisco, Oswalt opens the skit with how he is dissatisfied with his dress comparing it to the dress of a lesbian, "dyke" as he put it. Then Oswalt moves into likewise insulting commentary about midgets, about how he would like to stomp them when drunk [1Cor. 6:9-10].

After some material about where he likes to live and where he hates to live Oswalt begins several sentences about vulgar references to male demon anatomy and demon body fluids. Oswalt then carries on about how his previous job as a TV writer with insults to mentally disabled persons.

Soon, Oswalt begins insulting law enforcement personnel "attacking" police management of children and homosexual practitioners, including intensely vulgar sexual references. Then Oswalt speaks to masturbating to *Zena: The Warrior Princess* and adds watching pornography [**]. Oswalt somehow enters into a monologue about a magazine about people who like to urinate in the faces and mouths of others, adding to it comments about necrophilia and sexual behavior with whiffle balls [Ezek. 16:58].

After a session of wanting Nick Nolte to play the part of Han Solo(tm) and of Nicholas Cage being the new Superman(tm), Oswalt talks to suicide and how he would to do it "with style." The Tom Carvell (ice cream, east coast) becomes Oswalt's next victim ... with vulgarity. [James 1:21] There is more of the same caliber of "entertainment. And ALL of it is saturated with foul language [Col. 3:8] and vulgar "humor" [Eph. 5:4].     "There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.
