EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

"Patch Adams" -- featuring Robin Williams...nude! Yup, nude. Full rear nudity from the shoulders down. Well, the feet were not nude since they had shoes and socks on. As Adams graduated from medical school, he sent them a message by wearing nothing under his graduation gown left open from the rear. It's happening folks! Nudity, previously reserved for R-rated movies has sleezed down to PG-13......again! And wait until you read our review of "Waking Ned Devine." It is PG and, yup, nudity.

Besides the nudity, "Patch Adams" contained a great deal of unacceptable language: 18.9 per hour. In addition, vulgar references and innuendo saturated much of the script: such as references to masturbation, male anatomy, male erection, and human exudates. A murder/suicide popped up, too, although none of the acts or mechanisms of murder or suicide were shown. The heaviness of death in a hospital, admission of sexual abuse, and contemplation of suicide might distort reality for many impressionable kids. And Williams saying to God "You're not worth it" could warp the grasp some have of the omnipotence of God.

FINDINGS / SCORING: Patch Adams (1998) CAP Thermometers

Wanton Violence/Crime (W) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Impudence/Hate (I)(1) lost no intermediate level points but lost maximum level points once due to the use of the most foul of the foul language vocabulary.

Sex/Homosexuality (S) lost intermediate level points three times due to full rear adult male nudity.

Drugs/Alcohol (D) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Offense to God (O)(2) lost intermediate level points once due to saying "You're not worth it." to God.

Murder/Suicide (M)(3) lost no intermediate nor maximum level points.

Other examples of entertainment ignominy, each warranting the loss of the minimum point level, included

  • a muffled foul and vulgar expression
  • bare posterior exposed for an injection (without sterilization, I might add)
  • the bizarreness of life in an asylum
  • vulgar references to human anatomy, masturbation, male erection, and human exudates
  • three uses of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive
  • 31 uses of unacceptable language (other than God's name in vain)
  • lesbian reference
  • sexual innuendo
  • vulgar humor
  • death in a hospital
  • admission of sexual abuse
  • a woman in bed
  • theft of hospital supplies
  • references to murder and suicide
  • grief of loss
  • contemplation of suicide

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the three/four letter word vocabulary is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication. As required of the Holy Scriptures, unless God's name is used with reverence to His glory and praise, its use is considered in vain, whether literal or euphemistic.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Presentation of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
