Production (US): Davis Entertainment Company, Dune Entertainment Distribution (US): Fox Home Entertainment Director(s): Mark Waters Producer(s): John Davis, Jessica Tuchinsky, Mark Waters, Derel Dauchy, Joel Gotler, Jonathan Filley, Ira Napoliello, Linda Hill Screenplay: Sean Anders, John Morris, Jared Stern Based on Novel by: Richard and Florence Atwater Cinematography/Camera: Florian Ballhaus Music: Rolfe Kent Film Editing: Bruce Green Casting: Marci Liroff, Kathleen Chopin Production Design: Stuart Wurtzel Viewed on Fox Home Entertainment DVD Mr. Popper's Penguins is a fantasy tale of New York high-priced real estate developer Thomas Popper (Jim Carey) receiving a last will and testament gift from his father ... a Gentoo penguin. Soon, by miscommunication Popper has six Gentoo penguins. And that is not all. Three of the penguins lay eggs and two of them hatch. All in Popper's New York lush apartment ... which does not allow pets. Popper's relationship with his distant absentee father was unrequited. His father was always gone, globe trotting as an explorer, promising to be back ... but never showed up. His father's contacts with Thomas were by an amateur radio set. Popper grew up to be a photocopy of his father -- until the penguins lead things along a more positive path. Popper was married to Amanda (Carla Gugino) and had two children, Janie (Madeline Carroll) and Billy (Maxwell Perry Cotton). Being divorced, Thomas appears to Billy just like Thomas' father did to him. The plight created by caring for the penguins in Popper's apartment turned out to be a force to reunify the Popper family. But along the way is a zoo penguin expert (Clark Gregg) trying to get the penguins away from Popper so they could, in his words, receive proper care. Angela Lansbury appears as Mrs. Van Grundy, the owner of the legendary Central Park's Tavern on the Green, the target of Popper's professional real estate interest. If he can get Van Grundy's property, Popper would be made a partner of the firm. And he gets it but not the way one might think by what I have revealed. You can probably imagine what might go on in caring for six penguins in a plush slate-grey Manhattan apartment. And you would probably be right. For example, imagine six inches of snow in your living room. An ice skating path between rooms. I am not going to try to build an in-depth summary of the story in case, after discovering herein the truth about its content, you decide this film is fit for your family. Fit for the family? That is your call to make. We just tell you what is there - you decide on its fitness. This film is rated PG but because of all the crude humor, abuse of God's name and other matters revealed by the listing in the Findings section of this report, this film earned a PG-13 equivalent final score of 67 out of 100, making it a 13-PG*. The final score of 67 is at the very top of the scoring range earned by PG-13 films (67 to 55 out of 100) therefore one point below the bottom of the scoring range earned by PG-rated films (68 to 86 out of 100). But it is a PG-13 equivalent score nonetheless. Most notably because of the R-equivalence of the findings made by the Impudence/Hate content investigation area, not because of the intensity of any particular instance of assault on morality and wholesomeness but because of the sheer number of "lesser" assaults. See our CAP Rule of 1000 publication for more information about this content loading technique. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual content investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model, is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 81 out of 100 This is not really a "violent" film but this investigation area also includes criminal behaviors. Those found include unlawful confinement, unlawful bondage and assault. Impudence/Hate (I) - 10 out of 100 If it were not for all the lying, the crude humor, the defecation humor and teen disrespect of her father and a few other matters of impudence such as flatulence repeatedly, this film would have earned at least a yellow CAPCon Alert light shown in the upper lef corner of this page. But instead it earned a red CAPCon Alert light. Note that during the rolling credits a rap song uses two instances of profanity. If it were not for the rap song and two uses of a euphemism of the most foul of the foul words, once by a teen and once by an adult, there would be no profanity in this film. [Eph. 4:29] Sexual Immorality (S) - 74 out of 100 A crotch hit, crude anatomical humor repeatedly, a dress ripped off a woman, a woman atop a man and a penguin humping a woman's leg caused the loss of a touch over one quarter of the starting 100 points in this content investigation area. [Eph. 5:4] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 81 out of 100 The repeated appearances of alcoholic beverages, the drinking and a reference to illegal drugs in the background rap song cost the film about 20% of the starting 100 points in this convent investigation area. Offense to God (O) - 62 out of 100 Abuse of God's name was relatively rampant. That is an example of the contempt for His name He warns us about in Deut. 5:11. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There are no murders or suicides or even mentions of them in the entire 88.5 minutes of this film. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
