SUMMARY / COMMENTARY:

If Scriptural references appear, the full text appears at the end of the Summary / Commentary likely using a mix of KJV and NIV.

MOULIN ROUGE (PG-13) -- Too bad there was so much sexual programming.

Christian (Ewan McGregor), enamored with tinsel tinkling, is off to Paris to be a play writer. He ends up in Moulin Rouge, a sultry and seedy section of Paris known (in the movies) for its sinful sensual satisfactions. In a seedy apartment on the third floor of a building in Moulin Rouge campus, Christian is laboring over his typewriter to write a story -- the story he had just lived.

As he tries to begin his life as a writer pecking away aimlessly at his typewriter Christian meets a big man of lesser stature, better suited to an earlier century, named Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) as he falls through the floor above him. Finding that Toulouse is a performing artist, Christian agrees to stand in for one of the other four artists in the entourage during a rehearsal. The troupe finds that Christian has the mind for performing and a cooperation is formed.

Christian Media News

How the connection is made between the above setting and the Toulouse crew attending a gala performance at the Moulin Rouge headed by the impresario, Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent) I am not sure unless it is a maneuver to get Christian to meet up with the star of the Moulin Rouge, Satine (Nicole Kidman). Satine is a lady who sells herself but has a true and sincere heart; a true beauty of the opera set. How the connection is made may not be that important anyway since this is a high energy and very fast paced musical that leaves no moment to pause.

Finding favor with Zidler, Christian becomes part of the Moulin Rouge group and "works" with Satine to develop a play. But the play needs financing. Enter the Duke of Worcester (Richard Roxburgh) looking strangely like Snidely Whiplash. The Duke will finance the show if he can have deciding authority in the play and if he can "own" Satine. Christian did not like that last part. Not one bit. So, the two, who by now had established a love relationship, carried on the relationship behind the Duke's back.

But now appears a dark thread in the cloak of white. Satine is suffering the consumption disease -- tuberculosis. This is kept from all for a long time, especially from Christian and the Duke. But not kept from the Duke is Satine. Money speaks loudly. And the Duke's money placed Satine in his possession -- until love wins over and Christian gets her back. Now, more fierce than ever the Duke promises not only to pull his funding but to kill Christian unless Christian is thrown out of Satine's' life and she vows herself to him.

There is more to the plot but I have spoiled as much of it as I am going to for those who wish to see this 120 minutes of energetic rock opera. There is indeed a lot of good music and talent to be observed. Too bad some of it has to be spent on ignominy.

Among the matters which will likely cause mom/dad to squirm a little are many examples of sexual programming, including obscured intercourse with partial nudity with an on-going sexual relationship by an unmarried couple being obvious. There is also homosexual suggestions, inappropriate touch in dance, vulgar dance positioning, and self-touching to entice. Further, there are faces in very close proximity to posteriors (both genders), a woman straddling the crotch of a prone man (though clothed), and suggestion of intercourse by motions of a woman's body. The open mouth kissing, repeated focus on cleavage, pelvic thrusts, and planning of using sex to manipulate plus all the other examples of sexual programming are definitely not according to biblical "Hoyle." [1Cor. 6:9-10] While the Sex/Homosexuality (S) Investigation Area revealed programming clearly equivalent to R-rated flicks, four of the other five of the Investigation Areas (W, I, D, O) each revealed programming equivalent to PG-rated movies and the Murder/Suicide (M) Investigation Area earned 100 with no examples noted. And I was *very* surprised that there was but a single use of the three/four letter word vocabulary noted. Just one. Too bad there was so much sexual programming. There were some great music and high sparkle dance routines presented. If Kidman and McGregor actually sang the numbers heard, they are really good vocal artists, too.

If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ].
  • 1Cor. 6:9-10 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I aplaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
