Production (US): Columbia Pictures, Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Rachel Horowitz Distribution (US): Sony Pictures Director(s): Bennett Miller Producer(s): Michael De Luca, Rachel Horovitz, Bradd Pitt, Scott Rudin, Andrew Karsch, Sidney Kimmel, Mark Bakshi, Elizabeth W. Scott, Alissa Phillips Screenplay by: Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin Story by: Stan Chervin Based on the book by Michael Lewis Cinematography/Camera: Wally Pfister Music: Mychael Danna Film Editing: Christopher Tellefsen Casting: Francine Maisler Production Design: Jess Gonchor Art Direction: Brad Ricker, Chris Grun Viewed on Sony Pictures Home Entertainment DVD Moneyball is a rare production that contains some of the typical earmarks of PG-13 but the total picture or envelope actually earned a PG-equivalent final score of 71 out of 100, thus the CAP designator of PG(13). "PG(13)" means the film earned a final score in the range of scores earned by PG-rated films in the comparative baseline database of films (the "PG" in "PG(13))" but the MPAA rated it PG-13 (the "(13)" in "PG(13))." Moneyball is definitely R-equivalent in language and alcohol but G-equivalent in everything else. Get a curse-free filter for your home equipment and filter out the 28 uses of profanity and the two uses of the most foul of the foul words and you will have G-equivalent programming except for the four examples of chewing tobacco and the three examples of drinking. Moneyball is, in my nonprofessional opinion, a production of quality caliber with talented cast and superb attention to detail. Too bad the writers had to throw in all the profanity, tobacco and alcohol. If these contents were left out this would be a solid G-equivalent film. And a good one at that. Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, a player turned scout then general manager for the Oakland Athletics. The "As" are not doing well at all. Billy decides to challenge the traditional baseball "system" and devise his own way of doing things to rebuild his team on a shoestring budget. With the help of Yale-educated economist Peter Brand played by Jonah Hill, the pair build a new team from a gaggle of misfits through trade after trade and end up changing the way baseball is played. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual content investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model, is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 95 out of 100 The only matters related to violence and/or crime are the two episodes of reckless driving. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Twenty-three uses of profanity plus two uses of the most foul of the foul words plus two mouthed uses of it stole all of the starting 100 points in this content investigation area, making it clearly equivalent to R-rated programming in this area. [Col. 3:8, Eph. 4:29] In addition to the cussing were two crude terms, Billy telling his 12 year old daughter Casey (Kerris Dorsey) "Don't tell your mother", a number of tantrums by adults, lying and teen disrespect of the father in song. [Isa. 2:17] Sexual Immorality (S) - 95 out of 100 A crude anatomical reference and pelvic thrust dancing were the only matters applicable to this content investigation area. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 47 out of 100 This is the second of two content investigation areas that found content to be equivalent to some R-rated features: chewing tobacco (repeatedly)and drinking (repeatedly) stole over half of the starting 100 points in this investigation area. Such content in and as entertainment begs of reminding our readers of the findings of the American College of Physicians regarding the influence of alcohol and tobacco in and as entertainment on our youth. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) There is nothing to say that viewing smoking in and as entertainment does not carry the same danger of influence as viewing drinking. Actually, the same matter of behavior implantation applies to any behavior demonstrated in and as entertainment, including good behavior. Rather ... er ... sobering facts to be sure. But do we listen? Offense to God (O) - 92 out of 100 Twice God's name was abused but both times without the four letter expletive, not that leaving off the four letter expletive absolves the one who abuses His name of the guilt of doing so. God will not hold guiltless they who use His name in vain. [Deut. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders or suicides were portrayed in the entire 126.7 minutes of the show. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
