Spencer Art Direction: Ian Phillips Viewed on MGM DVD Tanzie and Ava Marchetta (Hilary and Haylie Duff) live in the lap of luxury. Before his death, their chemist father, Vic Marchetta (Philip Casnoff) had built an empire on cosmetics. Now, housekeeper and para-mother, Inez (Maria Conchita Alonso) cares for the girls. While Ava is old enough to be out on her own, Tanzie is not. So, the pair stay with their housekeeper and loving friend of nine years. All is going well until one day an announcement is released that Marchetta cosmetics are causing long-term skin lesions. That was all it took to topple the Marchetta enterprises. The now penniless girls, still living with Inez but now at Inez's home, launch an investigation to find out whether the claim is true and if not, to rebuild the Marchetta empire. With the help of LA Free Legal Clinic lawyer, Henry Baines (Lukas Haas) an intricate weave of corporate espionage, bribery and chicanery surfaces. All indicators point not to Marchetta's rival, Fabiella (Anjelica Huston) but rather to the Marchetta CEO, Tommy Katzenbach (Brent Spiner - Star Trek-TNG (tm) "Data"). Material Girls earned a CAP final score of 58 which places it deep into the scoring range earned by PG-13 films (55 to 68 out of 100) in the comparative baseline database. That makes it a hard 13-PG, meaning it earned a score earned by PG-13 films but was rated PG by the MPAA. Material Girls could have been a nice Saturday-afternoon-at-the-movies-with-mom Hilary chick flick if it were not for ... Wanton Violence/Crime (W) ... things like Ava saying "I'd kill my first-born for...", a background soap show presenting a woman talking of suicide if she can't get sex, falsifying of evidence plus a couple other matters of either the violent nature or criminal intent. [Matt. 23:25, Hab. 2:9] Impudence/Hate (I) ... the nine uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary [Prov. 22:11, Col. 3:8], the lies [Prov. 6:16, 19], the mother cheating on the father [Eph. 5:22], the "Bite me" by Ava [Eph. 5:4], and the reference in the script of this PG film to an R-rated film which would require the viewer to have seen it for the reference to make any sense. [Luke 17:2] Sexual Immorality (S) ... the saturation of the film with dressing to maximize the female form and/or skin exposure, camera angle to force the viewer on private parts or exposed skin near private parts and posing to augment these matters plus a number of other examples of challenging sexual modesty. There were so many events of one or more of these "lesser" matters of ignominy (see CAP Rule of 1000 for more information) that the magnitude of their sum equaled the sum of the sexual matters in many R-rated films. [Gal. 5:19, 1 Ths. 4:1-5] Drugs/Alcohol (D) ... party drinking, multiple. Smoking, three times. [1 Cor. 6:19] Offense to God (O) ... 12 uses of God's name in vain but without the four letter expletive. Note that God's name in vain includes the teen popular three-syllable sentence with His name tailing it. [Deut. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) There were no murders nor suicides noted. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
