This film earned the rare green CAPCon Alert light. Green means that routine but mature attention should be given to the findings in the report. A young married couple, Marty (Katherine Heigl) and Aaron Claridge (Oliver Macready), had just arrived at the place they wanted to make their home in the Old West frontier when Aaron met with death while chasing after an escaped horse. Now Marty is alone in the wilderness. In the middle of a rainstorm widower Clark Davis (Dale Midkiff) approached Marty with a proposal that would change Marty's world ... and his. Clark asked Marty to marry him because they both had needs only marriage could meet. Clark had a nine year old daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak) that needed a mother, even if only until Spring, and Marty needed a roof over her head - the harsh mountain winter was on its way and all she had was a small covered wagon. Reluctantly Marty agreed to join in a platonic, hands-off marriage to Clark with the intent to claim Clark's promise to send her back home in the Spring. Do their losses turn to love or to something else? Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 88 out of 100 The only issues of violence/crime found were a fatal head injury, a marital argument and severe weather rescue peril. Impudence/Hate (I) - 88 out of 100 Missie lashes out at Marty yelling that she hates Marty. Adolescent outbursts at caregivers might be expected in situations such as portrayed in this film and Marty may not have been Missie's "real mother" but each time an adolescent sees such an outburst onscreen it may embolden him/her to do likewise in the same, similar or even manufactured situations. Hate is a powerful and addictive emotion (and spawns of hate such as arrogance/rebellion) of which Jesus wants us to rid ourselves. [Col. 3:8, 1 Pet. 2:1] In addition to the above, Missie lied twice. [Prov. 19:5] While such may also be typical of adolescents under the same conditions, such conditions do not excuse violating his Word about telling the Truth. Likewise with hatred, arrogance and rebellion, such a display can embolden the youthful into doing likewise. Sexual Immorality (S) - 96 out of 100 The only instance of sexually oriented material was Marty in a bathtub. Taking a bath is, of course, not sexual but 200,000,000 viewers watching someone bathing is different. Such a scene can lead the mind, especially of the young male, into imaginations about the nudity of the bating woman since everyone who takes a bath does so without wearing any clothes. [Phil. 4:8] Sometimes suggestion is more powerful that outright display. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 There were no findings of possession of, consumption of or reference to illegal drugs or alcohol or tobacco and there were no abuses of prescription drugs found. Offense to God (O) - 96 out of 100 Only one time did anyone use God's name in vain. It was the time Misty used God's name as an expletive. [Deut. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders or suicides were found. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
