The equation is know/love - marriage - baby. That is the natural order of things. That is, by the way, the way God intended it. But not so with Eric and Holly. They get it backwards from the start. For Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) and Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl), the end of the equation is the beginning of it. Peter (Hayes MacArthur) and Allison Novak (Christina Hendricks) were best friends of Eric and Holly. Peter and Allison were also planners. Peter and Allison had tried to get Eric and Holly together because Peter and Allison planned on Eric and Holly raising their baby daughter, Sophie (Alexis Clagett, Brynn Clagett, Brooke Clagett, Brooke Liddell, Kiley Liddell) should they each suffer an untimely death. Indeed, Pete and Allison had legally named Eric and Holly as the legal guardians for Sophie in the event they should both die. But unfortunately Eric and Holly despised each other even after Pete and Allison tried to get them together. At this point, the "baby" part of the equation -- the end of the equation -- was in place but the "know/love" part of the equation -- the beginning -- had failed. At least it seemed to have failed. And the "marriage" part of the equation was totally out of the question. Nevertheless, because Eric and Holly loved Peter and Aliison, Eric and Holly agreed to serve as the legal guardians for Sophie. They would do their best to set aside the personality conflict they share and do what is best for Sophie, the "baby" part of the equation, and pretend to satisfy the "know/love" and "marriage" parts of the equation. A ready-made family with a baby but without the "know/love" and "marriage." Totally backwards! There is much more to the story but the gist of it is told above. Rather than spoiling the entire film let me stop here and get to that which most of you visit our pages -- the content. Brief discussions of the content by investigation area follow. Itemized listings of the findings are provided in the Findings/Scoring section. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 95 out of 100 The only display that even comes close to being violent in the entire 110 minutes of the show was when Holly tried to drive Eric's motorcycle. She popped the clutch and the bike jumped out from under her and into the path of a city bus which proceeded to grind the bike under it. Impudence/Hate (I) - Zero out of 100 Nineteen times someone uttered some form of profanity. In addition, Eric and Holly utter the most foul of the foul words once each. [Col. 3:8, Eph. 4:29, Prov. 22:11] All the lies did not help the score of this investigation area any. [Rev. 21:8] Sexual Immorality (S) - Zero out of 100 Another teen sex flick. Revelation 21:8 also applies well to the sexually immoral behaviors displayed and demonstrated in this film. It is saturated with dig after dig against wholesome sexual humility: inappropriate touch; sex talk (some detailed); a homosexual pair with a baby, repeatedly; adult man and woman in bed, ostensibly nude for intercourse, twice; making out frenzy; long-term cohabitation; more. [Rev. 21:8, Gal. 5:19, 1 Ths. 4:1 - 7, Eph. 4:19] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - Zero out of 100 This film presents alcohol and drinking repeatedly. [Eph 5:18] There are dangers in exposing adolescents to drinking and smoking in and as entertainment. Not only does God warn us of that, the American College of Physicians warn us likewise. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was • 46% for those with no viewing restrictions • 16% for those with partial viewing restrictions • four percent for those with complete viewing restrictions. Offense to God (O) - Zero out of 100 Thirty-eight times! One of them by a child. [Luke 17:2] That is how many times God's name is abused in this film. And each was a sin. If you don't like hearing that, talk to the One who wrote the Rules. Deuteronomy 5:11 for one. I suspect He is entitled since He spent three days in Hell so you and I would not have to spend one moment there. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 Not one murder or suicide. None. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
