Williams, Emily Wolfe Written by: Jonathan Bernstein, James Greer Cinematography/Camera: Kim Marks Music: Adam Accetta, Tim P., Stephen Phillips, Matt Vanacoro Film Editing: Gregg Featherman Casting: Libby Goldstein, Junie Lowry-Johnson Production Design: Macie Vener Art Direction: Andrew White Viewed At: Driftwood Theater 6 Slovenly health inspector, Larry is the gross in "gross." He needs a health inspection of his own. At least Larry is top notch at lowering the boom on health code violations. But Larry continues to give the department a bad name. His boss, Bart Tatlock (Tom Wilson) has become fed up with Larry's dirty appearance and just as dirty antics. But Wilson doesn't want to fire Larry. So, Wilson sets Larry up with a partner, Amy Butlin (Iris Bahr) who cannot make a move without going by the book. Some might say Wilson set Larry up with Amy to sharpen him up. Though there might have been earmarks of such a noble deed, Larry was being set up to fail (I could tell you about getting set up to fail). And just in time for the inexplicable sweep of poisoning in the city's finest restaurants. That is not the only poisoning in the movie. There are at least 36 uses of the three/four letter word vocablary in this film which the MPAA says is fit for 13 year olds. [Col. 3:8, Matt 25:40] And it is rife with toilet humor, crude humor and nearly every manner of disgusting behavior not to mention total disregard for sexual humility. It might be best described as a cussfest, crudefest, grossfest.[Eph. 5:4] And, of course, a film of such crudity would not be complete without at least one episode of drunkenness. "Hey! It's all in fun!" Maybe if you knew that adolescents who view drinking and drunkenness in and as entertainment are much more likely to abuse alcohol than those who don't. See the link associated with the reference to Eph. 5:18 below. And there is the typical sprinkling of mockery and cheapening of "Christian." One of Larry's comments about doing immoral things is "It ain't Christian." "Christain" has nothing to do with what is and is not immoral. God decides that. Being Christian does change what is and is not immoral one iota. Put another way, what is immoral is immoral whether the one performing the immoral deed is Christian or not. And Jesus is mocked at least once. [Gal. 6:7] I implore you to read carefully the rather lengthy listing of observations in the Findings/Scoring section before you even consider whether to watch this film with or without your family. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

Christian Educators Association International |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
