Cast/Crew Details Courtesy Internet Movie Database Production (US): DreamWorks Animation, Pacific Data Images (PDI) Distribution (US): Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Home Entertainment Director(s): Mark Osborne, John Stevenson Producer(s): Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger, Melissa Cobb, Kristina Reed Screenplay: Jonathan Aibel, Glenn Berger Story: Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris Cinematography/Camera: Yong Duk Jhun Music: John Powell, Hans Zimmer Film Editing: Clare De Chenu (as Clare Knight) Production Design: Raymond Zibach Art Direction: Tang Kheng Heng Viewed on DreamWorks Home Entertainment DVD The quintessential character, Po Panda (voice of Jack Black) -- the "role model" center of the story -- lies. I guess a role model lying makes it okay to lie? In a pig's eye. Especially to one's father since Po lied to his father so easily and without apparent consequence. Po had a dream about Kung Fu but Po tells his father it was a noodle dream -- something the father has been waiting for years to happen. While jumping up and down with glee the father spoke of the dream as if it were a nocturnal emission dream: "Oh, happy day. My son finally having the noodle dream! You don't know how long I've been waiting for this moment!" Po further denies having dropped something by saying someone dropped it after he dropped it. To my knowledge God has not made lying, any kind of lying, okay. Ever. He is rather stern about lying since He warns that all [unforgiven] liars will not make it to Heaven. And He isn't joking. He won't say at the Judgment Throne "Just kidding!" [Rev. 21:8] Yet we feed to our kids that some lies are okay when demonstrated in and as entertainment ... which is one of the most powerful influences on the planet. Indelibly. How many of you parents who have seen Old Yeller remember what Travis did when Old Yeller contracted rabies? Po (voice of Jack Black) dreams of becoming a kung fu expert. But alas, he is the son of a noodle-maker. As he sneaks to watch a kung fu extravaganza in which the next Dragon Warrior will be chosen, a series of slapstick violence events hurl him into the middle of the fray. Kung fu master Oogway (voice of Randall Duk Kim) takes the violent intrusion of Po as a sign and declares Po the next Dragon Warrior to protect the Valley of Peace. The previous Dragon Warrior, Tai Lung (voice of Ian McShane) was a star pupil of Master Shifu (voice of Dustin Hoffman) until Lung went bad and was condemned to prison. Much to the chagrin of Master Shifu, by the dictate of master Oogway Shifu must now train and condition Po to be the next Dragon Warrior. Shifu was not happy about the next Dragon Warrior being a fat panda. Neither were the Furious Five: Tigris (voice of Angelina Jolie); Monkey (voice of Jackie Chan); Crane (voice of David Cross); Mantis (voice of Seth Rogen); Viper (voice of Lucy Liu). Shifu and the Furious Five all thought Tigris would be the next Dragon Warrior. After a long sequence of rigorous training and conditioning, Panda emerges as the new Dragon Warrior. Without knowing it, among all the kung fu-sounding phrases and quips the writers brought out a tenet of God: that each breath, each step, each thought is a gift. But in this case, "Today is a gift. This is why it is called 'present'." Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - zero out of 100 The CAP Analysis Model treats animated/game violence as influential as live actor violence. The Internet is filled with reports of older kids killing younger kids with "moves" learned from marital arts media. Power Rangers(tm), Mortal Kombat(tm) and other entertainment media are accused of being the influence that led to the older kids killing younger kids with "moves" learned in the media. With this in mind you may understand how the CAP Analysis Model found enough demonstrations of kung fu and other violence to be "big picture" equivalent to the level of violence in many R-rated films, including slo-mo flesh/body distortion associated with violence against a victim. [Prov. 16:29] Impudence/Hate (I) - 68 out of 100 This investigation area found content to include not only several lies [Prov. 19:5, Ps. 101:7, 2 Tim. 2:16] but body exudates humor. [Eph. 5:4] Also presented for the target audience were hatred of self and willingness to be killed to "pay for mistake." Those last two issues of assault on morality and wholesomeness are prime examples of stealing childhood from children. Only one use of the three/four letter word vocabulary was noted. A note about the Bible's contradiction with hating one's self. The phrase "Love thy neighbor as thyself" appears at least nine times in the KJV. One cannot love his/her neighbor as thyself unless one loves him/her self.] Sexual Immorality (S) - 92 out of 100 The only instances of content found that were applicable to this investigation area were the innuendo about nocturnal emission and a crotch hit. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 There was nothing noted that expressed the use of illegal drugs, of alcohol, abuse of prescription drugs or smoking. Offense to God (O) - 84 out of 100 The only content found in this area were the "had a vision", unholy control of the elements, unholy transfiguration and the yin-yang. Though the yin-yang is widely used in the martial arts field, it is also used by some for evil purposes such as representing opposition to God and His Word. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders or suicides were noted. Please note that always the individual investigation area discussions are just summaries. the full accounting of the content of a film is found in the Findings/Scoring section. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
