Counter-espionage. Agents. Double agents. Only no 007. Just Tom Cruise as Agent Roy Miller. Or is it Matthew Knight? A new battery has been invented by Simon Feck (Paul Dana). This battery is not an ordinary battery. It is about the size of the innards of a car cigarette lighter (and I suspect that is what the battery prop was). the new battery, called the Zephyr, is a tiny powerhouse. It could power a small city ... or a large submarine. A l-o-t of people are very interested in the battery. Spanish arms dealer Antonio Quintanna (Jordi Molia) for one. FBI Director George (Viola Davis) for another. Trying to get through the airport security with the battery, Miller realized it would not get through undetected. Miller [intentionally] bumped into unsuspecting traveler, June Havens (Cameron Diaz) before passing through security and then again after passing through. How bumbling can one be? But, much to the ignorance of June, Miller used her to plant the battery in her luggage when he first bumped into her than retrieved it when he bumped into her the second time. June is now a co-agent whether she knows it or not. At the boarding gate June was, at first, not allowed to board the plane because of over-booking. Moments later she was told a seat became available. But when she gets on the plane there are only about ten passengers, leaving a great deal of seats empty. So, on board are Miller, June and about eight other people. After some small talk with Miller, she finds out what he does for a living. But I will not go into and more detail about the plot or story should you find this film acceptable after discovering what the CAP Analysis Model (the Findings/Scoring section) reveals about it. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zero out of 100 The list of findings regarding the violence/crime content of the film is much too lengthy to try to discuss in this space. I ask that you visit the listing in the Findings/Scoring section for a full accounting of the violence/crime content of Knight and Day. But because of the extent of violence in this film I will share with you at least one of God's admonitions against violence. [Prov. 16:29] God speaks darkly and disapprovingly of violence 56 times from Genesis to revelation in the KJV Bible. Further, man has recently decided to chime in on God's Wisdom with "viewing violence may lead to real life violence." Impudence/Hate (I) - 45 out of 100 Seven uses of profanity is atypical lite for most PG-13 films. But 7 is 7 too many. As is the one use of the most foul of the foul words. [Col. 3:8, Eph. 5:4, Eph. 4:29] Other than that, lying, "I want it NOW" and deceit by the airline tops off the impudent and/or hateful content of this film. Sexual Immorality (S) - 65 out of 100 While there are not as many sexually immoral behaviors as appear to be typical of PG-13s there are enough to lose about one third of the starting 100 points in this investigation area: self-touching; attention to privates; woman in underwear; scant swimsuit; a woman undressing a man and a man undressing a woman (both unseen); more. [1 Thess. 4:1 - 5] Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 20 out of 100 Aside from a splattering of booze and drinking, a number of druggings to control the victim are portrayed. While the booze and drinking indeed stole a few points from the starting 100 points of this investigation area, the druggings were very expensive to the area score. Offense to God (O) - 10 out of 100 One of Diaz's favorite expressions appears to be the three syllable sentence with God's name trailing it. Twenty five times His name was abused but all were without the four letter expletive. Whether His name is attached to an expression of dread and fear or to a two syllable expression, such use is blasphemous. And He does not like that. [Deut. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 77 out of 100 While there are a large number of killings, most were defensive killings and were not incorporated as murder but rather as violence in the Wanton Violence/Crime investigation area. However, three of the killings were indeed murder, two by gunfire and one by knife. While they were not the gory, dripping with blood, splatter-the-wall sort of killings, they were murder. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
