Kate McKay (Meg Ryan), a successful ad agency exec and Stuart (Breckin Meyer) were an item. Kate gave her best four years to Stuart. But alas, their relationship came to a halt. Stuart became obsessed with time equations, thinking if he could find the right time and place he could find a rip in time and be able to travel through it to the past. And that is what he did.

Finding himself in the 1800s, Stuart snapped some pictures of the locale and the peoples. Stuart was so obvious that the Duke of Albany, Leopold (Hugh Jackman) plus about five other names, noticed the strange device Stuart was aiming at everything and everyone. Chasing after Stuart, Leopold ended up getting dragged into the 21st century with Stuart. Now starts the same ole story about the man from the past functioning in the present.

There was indeed some quality performances and decent humor though freckled through some programming not quite befitting of wholesome and polite. Jackman shows us yet another aspect of his many talents, truly an opposite of the arrogant and bitter Wolverine of *X-Men* . Jackman made the show. Ryan was her same self she has played in so many other movies. Rather 'photocopy' in delivery but still quite moving in places.

As the 19th century man learned to cope in the 21st century, the 21st century learns about several wholesome values and ethics exhibited as the norm of the 19th century. My, how we have grown up as a people. My how we have matured so beyond the suffocating restrictions of wholesome manners and politeness, respect and unselfishness, humility and honor, integrity and inhibition, self-control and purity. Now there is a "message" about modern ethics and standards! There is also a message hidden within it. Though we are older as a people and have been conditioned to accept as morally invisible that which was once morally unacceptable, His Word has not changed. Not one bit. What was sinful then is still sinful now. The only thing that has changed is man.

After reels and reels of watching kissing in movies, I did want to say something about the kissing in this movie. Typically in movies for teens the kissing is gaping-mouth tongue kissing, with the face disappearing behind the cavernous mouth. The kissing between Ryan and Jackman was quite probably the best example-setting kissing I have seen in a PG-13. Their mouths were closed during kissing. All the time. What an unexpected touch from Miramax which is known for the once rated NC-17 *Pulp Fiction*. Hear! Hear! Keep up the good work, Miramax. Maybe that kudo should go also to the director, James Mangold.

While warm and gentle in the kissing department, there were several issues that are likely to be of concern to mom/dad. A number of sexual innuendo and comments were noted as were the usual man/woman in bed together (though clothed this time), implied sexual immorality, and a nude woman in bed (covered) [Mark 7:21]. The probable cause for the PG-13 was the language. Seventeen uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary plus 15 uses of God's name in vain with and without the four letter expletive [Col. 3:8, Deut. 5:11]. Not one of the most foul of the foul words was found. Subtle is the encouragement of dishonesty for a paycheck and selling personal integrity to get ahead [Prov. 10:9]. Also likely contributing to the PG-13 rating was the jumping off a bridge to pass through the time portal. Let the listing in the Findings/Scoring section tell it all.

  • Mark 7:21 For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,
  • Col. 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
  • Deut. 5:11 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
  • Prov. 10:9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

    *******Food for Thought*******
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto [or for] one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto [or for] me.

NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our five-year study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.

    (1) As noted in CAP Special Report-001, "Investigation Area and Scoring Trend," of the six CAP Investigation Areas, Impudence/Hate was the strongest presence in all four movie classifications. It has a strong revelation about the entertainment media.

    (2) The use of the three/four letter word vocabulary without God's name in vain is incorporated into the Impudence/Hate Investigation Area. The use of God's name with or without the four letter expletive is incorporated into the Offense to God Investigation Area. There is no duplication.

    (3) Only portrayal of successful murder or suicide are incorporated into Murder/Suicide. Portrayal of attempts to commit murder or suicide and deaths by police action or war are incorporated into Wanton Violence/Crime.
