Cast/Crew Details Courtesy Internet Movie Database Production (US): Discovery Films, FilmFour, Passion Pictures Distribution (US): THINKFilm Director(s): David Sington Presented by: Ron Howard Producer(s): Simon Andreae, John Battsek, Duncan Copp, Julie Goldman, Sarah Kinsella, Christopher Riley Cinematography/Camera: Clive North Music: Philip Sheppard Film Editing: David Fairhead Viewed on THINKFilm/Lionsgate DVD Our astronauts have been to the Moon nine times. In the Shadow of the Moon is a story of the 24 men who have gone to the Moon ... and back. The title of this film is cleverly taken from the account of one man's trip around the Moon. I'll leave it to you to discover the thread. The following astronauts are present with commentary: Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Alan Bean, Eugene Cernan, Michael Collins, Charles Duke, Jim Lovell, Edgar D. Mitchell, Harrison Schmitt, Dave Scott and John Young. These men spoke of their history-making trips to the Moon, a three-days one-way trip of 240,000 miles. Of all the men who have left our atmosphere, only those who have traveled to the Moon have seen the entire circle of the Earth. Jim Lovell had a poignant perspective. He related that one can hide the Earth and all its glory and troubles behind one's thumb while on the Moon. Charlie Duke of Apollo 16 even tells of finding Christ by what he experienced in his walk on the Moon. This film is centered around the Apollo missions of the late 60s and the 70s. Part of the story relates the problems the world was having and how they impacted the astronauts. File footage includes archives of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Sam Rayburn and Queen Elizabeth II. While a few images of warfare and civil unrest freckle the 97 minutes, this is not a violent film. Nor is it sensationalistically graphic. It is best described as a documentary. This film's non-graphic posture is evidenced not only by the G-equivalent final score but by the very low Influence Density score of 0.19. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) The only matters of violence noted were of violent destruction by explosion and fire as the then infant space program lumbered through its early years and suffered a number of setbacks of equipment failure. "Setbacks" might be a nuisance to the commercial world but space program equipment includes thousands of pounds of flammable fuel. Images were included of the aftermath of the fire in a capsule due to an electrical spark in an environment of 100% oxygen at 16 pounds per square inch pressure, killing three astronauts. And since the film is circa the Vietnam war and all the stateside malcontentism of the era, images of that war are included as are images of a few examples of the massive civil unrest of the time. Impudence/Hate (I) Three times the three/four letter word vocabulary is heard. While each might be described as a conversational snippet, each use is not in accordance with His wishes for our communication. [Prov. 22:11, Col. 3:8] Some of the images of civil unrest included images not only of violence but of hate. [Prov. 16:29, Rom. 12:18] Sexual Immorality (S) Not one instance of sexually immoral behavior or imagery was noted in the entire 97 minutes. Drugs/Alcohol (D) The only presentation of behavior incorporated by this investigation area is smoking. Twice. One time may be of dope by a hippie but whether it was dope or just a cigarette could not b e confirmed. [1 Cor. 6:19 - 20] Offense to God (O) Unfortunately, God's name is used in vain five times. And one of the astronauts spoke of evolution, of how the molecules in his body evolved from all that he could see while in space. [Duet. 5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) None were observed since deaths by warfare (bodies unseen) are incorporated by the Wanton Violence/Crime investigation area. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
