Morri, James Wan Casting: Kellie Gesell, Anne McCarthy Production Design: Aaron Sims Art Direction: Jennifer Spence Viewed on Sony Home Entertainment DVD Insidious indeed -- of the filmmakers to make a film about one of the truths about demons: that they serve Satan which is after our souls. That the reasons portrayed are all wrong and that the portrayed methods are all wrong is immaterial, of course. Yes, Satan wants the souls of children ... of anyone. Indeed, children are highly precious to Jesus which is why Satan would love to have them. But he cannot. Not until the child is of the age of accountability when s/he becomes accountable for his/her own mind and heart, about 13 years old, can Satan have any influence over children. Until then, children are untouchables indeed. They are blessed by God and, if they die before the age of accountability, will spend eternity in Heaven by God's Power. Children may be influenced by other people who are not Saved and are influenced by Satan but of their own Satan cannot touch them. [Mark 10:13-16] When is the age of accountability? I don't think anyone can tell you but it is generally accepted as the time of puberty. Dalton (Ty Simpkins) in this film is beyond any shadow of doubt not yet at the age of accountability. So, another error on the part of filmmakers. But then, I have not seen a spook story or horror flick that was not full of errors regarding the Bible's accounting of evil. The Lambert family experience odd and inexplicable events and happenings on a daily basis in their new home. Baby Cali (uncredited) cries way too much, suggesting that she is being disturbed by something no one else can see. Foster (Andrew Astor) is frightened by what He thinks is Dalton walking around in the middle of the night while Dalton is comatose (so sayeth the doctors). Before Dalton fell off the ladder in the attic of their new home and banged his head, he was frightened by strange events as well. While mom, Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne), is sneakingly sensitive to what is going on, dad, Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) is not willing to believe any astro-ethereal-nutso nothing. Not at first anyway. So, with all the apparently evil forces at work in their home the Lamberts decide to move out of the house into a different house. Mom just knew the first house was haunted. But the same things immediately began to happen in the second house and even more so. Mom thought that whatever was haunting the other house came with them to this house. How right she was ... Dalton. It was not the house that was "haunted." It was Dalton. Dalton is a Traveler, one who can experience astral projection of his soul. He can take out-of-body trips to anywhere he wishes but this time he went too far and cannot find his way back "home." Dalton's soul is trapped in an ethereal dimension of the astral world. Sharing that world with Dalton are hordes of tortured souls of the dead who would love to live again ... in Dalton's body. Dad to the rescue! Is dad successful at fetching his boy? Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 28 out of 100 This film is intensely violent for short times. And it is unholy manifestations of evil in violence. A demon, or ghoul, tries to assault Renai. Baby Cali is frequently disturbed by evil. Demons try to take over Dalton's body in violence. And, as with almost every other demon movie, demons physically attack the living. Impudence/Hate (I) - 76 out of 100 This film is oddly ... but thankfully ... skimpy in profanity for a PG-13. Only eight uses of profanity, one of them being the most foul of the foul words (plus two uses of God's name in vain with the four letter expletive as noted in the Offense to God investigation area). But though there are only eight uses of profanity, that is eight times too many according to God's Word. [Eph. 5:4] Sexual Immorality (S) - 90 out of 100 If Byrne had not rubbed the inside of Wilson's upper leg, twice, and if the two were not seen in bed together there would be no sexually immoral content to this film. Certainly a wife might do rub the inside of her husband's thigh to comfort him in times of distress but Byrne is not Wilson's wife. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 Also odd for a PG-13, there were no instances of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs noted. Offense to God (O) - Zero out of 100 Here is where the concentration of assaults of morality and decency abound. There are far too many examples of assaults to even summarize here. Please look to the listing in the Findings/Scoring section for a complete accounting of the content applicable to this investigation area. [James 1:21, Prov. 8:13, Eph. 4:27, Deut. 18:10 - 12] Tell me something. Have you ever seen any biped critter walk through a solid wall or evaporate into nothingness or have its face fall off its bones as Hollywood seems to think is possible by demons, ghosts and the like? Ever? Then how is it you, even in humor/fantasy, might think they can? If we had never seen a spook walk through a wall in a movie or read it in a book (entertainment) we would not even conceive of it. The same applies to our perception of the powers and mannerisms of demons and ghouls. However demonism, witchcraft and the like are nothing to be messing around with. [Deut. 18:10 - 12] Let me explain. An angel is very powerful, powerful enough to slay 185,000 soldiers with a thought. [2 Kings 19:35] Indeed, angels have the full power of God if He wants them to have it. Demons are fallen angels [Rev. 12:3 - 4, 9]. You do the math. Murder/Suicide (M) - 90 out of 100 Josh chokes the psychic to death near the end of the show. But was it really Josh or was it the demon possessing him? Whatever. There is one murder in this film. That is if you do not count the gunfire murder of three dead souls who, after being murdered by the other dead soul, stood up and smiled at Josh. No, it doesn't make any sense to me either but then its a movie. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
