Kerstein Casting: Joseph Middleton Production Design: William Arnold Art Direction: Sue Chan Viewed At: Driftwood Theater 6 Fifty-one year old Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) leads an idyllic life of comfort by his success as a salesman for and boss of the Sports America magazine. Soon to be discovered by Dan was that Sports America was just recently purchased by mogul and magnate Teddy K (Malcolm McDowell) with Steckle (Clark Gregg) as his chief lieutenant and "executioner." At Dan's side in suburbia is wife, Ann (Marg Helgenberger) and 18 year old daughter, Alexandra (Scarlett Johansson) and younger daughter, Jana (Zena Grey). As a little story diversification thrown in, also at Dan's "side", with a little help from Ann, is a soon-to-be daughter. When Dan first noticed the pregnancy testing wrappings in the trash can, testing about which he was obviously kept in the dark, Dan immediately suspected Alexandra of being pregnant. But eventually Ann announces she and Dan will be parents - again. Though excited, Dan deso not relish the idea of being 72 years old when the not yet born baby turns 21. All was moving along nicely until the story added 26 year old Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) to Dan's life. Carter and Steckle laid out Carter's aggressive cell phone sales promotion to Teddy K. Teddy K. liked the pitch and moved Carter to head his new acquisition, the Sports America magazine. which is Dan's job. Now Dan is no longer the boss but has a new boss ... almost as many years younger than Dan as the new boss was old. Now the corporate throat cutting began. Dan, the once colonel now captain, tried his best to be the good captain for the new wonder colonel. Things seemed to be moving at least forward until Dan discovered Carter had been sleeping with Alexandra. His new boss bedding his daughter? What kind of a professional relationship could ever develop from that? What did "develop" over the course of the film was 34 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary [Col. 3:8], eight of which were by a teen; rear male nudity exhibition before children including the perpetrator's own [stage] daughters [Luke 17:2]; token use of mentions of homosexuality and a long-term immoral heterosexual relationship [Gal. 5:19, 1Cor. 6:9-10, Eph. 5:5]. The listing in the Findings/Scoring section will show you why this is yet another R-13. (The heart of the CAP Analysis Model) Wanton Violence/Crime (W) Impudence/Hate (I) Sexual Immorality (S) Drugs/Alcohol (D): Offense to God (O) Murder/Suicide (M) |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
