Production (US): PressOn Productions & JSJ Films, LLC Distribution (US): PressOn Productions Created by: Janice Henry, Josh Brown, Sarah Gray Hurleyville Them by: Tyler Dodds Director(s): Josh Brown, Sarah Gray Producer(s): Janice Henry, Josh Brown, Sarah Gray Written by: Josh Brown, Sarah Gray Viewed on PressOn Productions Home Entertainment DVD This episode of the Hurleyville series is a little darker than Episode 1. It presents some footage of the kids reaching out into the world. And the new kid, Riley Ross (Josh Maguire) is portrayed as a bit of a bully at first. Teen sensation Naomi Ramoni (Catherine Collins) is coming to Hurleyville. As the girls ogle and giggle over a poster of Naomi and the possibility of seeing her in a concert in Hurleyville, Lucy Lorenz (Jordan Bezner) says "I totally worship the ground she walks on." [Exod. 20:4] In an imagined concert Lucy asks Naomi if she can go with her and says she will do anything Naomi asks of her. In Naomi's home Naomi abuses Lucy as a slave. And Lucy expresses glee at the abuse because it is her idol who is abusing her. [Matt. 18:10] By the way, Naomi is reading a gossip magazine as she abuses Lucy. The Apostle Paul warned us about gossip in 2 Corinthians 12:20. If someone says s/he "worships the ground" someone walks on ask if s/he really means "worship." If s/he stutters about it saying "I didn't really mean worship", ask him/her what does s/he mean? It may help the one who made the worship claim rethink the word. A sidebar note for mom and dad. This film displays the peace symbol and the "rock-on" hand gesture. While it is clear that the use of these in this film is completely innocuous, please note that some circles use them for unholy purposes. Refer to our Back to School publication for more information. Following are brief discussions of the content per individual CAP investigation area. As always the Findings section of this report is the best source for discovering the full accounting of the content of this film. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 70 out of 100 The writers add a little more of what may be though of as typical of adolescents. Riley intimidates Sam Collins (Hayden Rich). Naomi abuses Lucy's adoration. Impudence/Hate (I) - 55 out of 100 As the boys try to play a little toss football with Riley and as Riley fails to catch the ball, they torment Riley and express some meanness. Hazel Collins (Allison Stewart) throws a bit of a tantrum at not being able to attend the Ramoni concert as does Riley at not being able to catch the football. Sexual Immorality (S) - 100 out of 100 As with Episode 1, there is no behavior or display that can be classed as sexually immoral in this episode. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 There are no illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco nor is there any abuse of prescription drugs. Offense to God (O) - 70 out of 100 Lucy is used as the device to demonstrate the cinematic theme of idol worship. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There are no murders or suicides. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |
(The objective heart of the CAP Analysis Model, independent of and insulated from the Summary / Commentary section.) NOTE: The reason for the seemingly low area scores (and inherently a relatively low final score) for so few instances of potentially abrasive content is the shortness of the film. For example, the two instances of violence found in this film by Wanton Violence/Crime are spread over only 22.4 minutes instead of typically the more than 90 minutes of a feature-length film. The same two examples over 90 minutes equates to an examples per hour figure of 1.3, but the same two instances of violence spread over the much shorter 22.4 minutes yields a much higher examples per hour figure of 5.4. The higher the examples per hour figure the more severe the potential for negative influence. So, the two instances of violence in the 22.4 minutes of this film have a higher potential of negative influence than would the same two instances spread over 90 minutes. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 70 out of 100 Impudence/Hate (I) - 55 out of 100 Sexual Immorality (S) - 100 out of 100 Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 Offense to God (O) - 70 out of 100 Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 |
There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
