Brooks Cinematography/Camera: Januz Karminski Music: Hans Zimmer Film Editing: Richard Marks, Tracy Smith Casting: Francine Maisler Production Design: Jeannine Claudia Oppewall Art Direction: Anthony Dunne Viewed on Sony Pictures Home Entertainment DVD USA Baseball Team player Lisa Jorgenson (Reese Witherspoon) has been cut from the team due to her age. She is 31 years old and the team management is not willing to take a chance on another year. What to do!? Baseball is all Lisa knows. Into Lisa's life comes wealthy business man George Madison (Paul Rudd) who has recently joined the unemployed after his father, Charles (Jack Nicholson) fired him because of a Federal investigation. Also into Lisa's life comes Matty Reynolds (Owen Wilson), a star pitcher for the Washington Nationals who spends his off-the-diamond life in one-night stands. Lisa is now in a love triangle. But Lisa doesn't know what love is. She does not think she is capable of it and thinks other people in love are pretending. Matty makes a game of "love" with any woman who will go to his apartment with him. But Gorge? George knows what love is and is the level-headed one of the triangle. Again, Hollywood apparently wants us to think that sex is love and love is sex. Little does Hollywood seem to know that love is not sex and sex is not love: that sex is a tool of love, an expression of love, nothing more; that a strong and rich love can be had without sex. But that would not sell. Now at whom does that point the finger? How Do You Know is a cookie cutter love triangle story with a cumbersome and sometimes disconnected string of many subplots that sometimes get in their own way. Jack is miscast in this part since when we see Charles all we can see is the thespian powerhouse Jack, not Charles. Matty is the same - always the overcompensating womanizing Owen Wilson with the cauliflower nose, not Matty. And, for me anyway, Reese will always be Legally Blonde. This could have been a good Saturday night popcorn flick, but four of the six CAP investigation areas (I, S, D and O) found content to be R-equivalent. One thing that was not answered was will George go to jail for his father for bribing the Egyptian or will he let his father go to jail? If the elderly Charles goes to jail for his crime it will mean 25 years to dead. If George goes to jail for his father's crime it will be three to five years. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 97 out of 100 This film is free of violent content. The only criminal content is the tale of Jack bribing an Egyptian business man which led to a Federal indictment. Jack did not follow the rules. [2 Tim. 2:5] Impudence/Hate (I) - 28 out of 100 Seventeen times someone uses profanity plus two uses of the most foul of the foul words [Col. 3:8, Eph. 4:29]. Other than the language bully tactics and a lie was all that was found applicable to this investigation area. But even one lie carries a serious consequence if unforgiven of it. [Rev. 21:8] God is not at all please with lies. Not even the "little white lies." Sexual Immorality (S) - 31 out of 100 This film is filled with sexually immoral content. A pure example of the waning standards of the MPAA. By their standards it is now okay for 13 year olds to watch adult women flash their crotch in a dress, to watch adults prance around in their underwear, to be exposed to immoral cohabitation for sex, to see a man and a woman in bed nude ... and more. A complete listing of the findings regarding sexually immoral behavior and talk in this movie is provided in the Findings/Scoring section, the heart of the CAP Analysis Model. [1 Ths. 4:7, Eph. 5:3 - 5, Hebr. 13:4] God intended for us to be pure and morally clean. This movie is a prime example of how to violate His Word about sexual relationships. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 46 out of 100 Booze, drinking, drunkenness, all repeatedly. All for influence of your adolescents. The very target of a 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP). The 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was o 46% for those with no viewing restrictions o 16% for those with partial viewing restrictions o four percent for those with complete viewing restrictions. [Eph 5:18] Offense to God (O) - 20 out of 100 God's name is abused 26 times through the 116.5 minutes of this film. None of the 26 times was with the four letter expletive but that does not excuse the sin of using His name in vain which includes the adolescent-popular three syllable sentence with His name trailing it. [Deut.5:11] Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 There were no murders or suicides noted, not even talk about them. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
