Are you ready for this? PG-13. Seventy six uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary. Three uses of the most foul of the foul words [Col. 3:8, Eph. 5:4]. Twenty uses of God's name in vain, 9 of them with the four letter expletive and most of them by Harrison Ford [Deut. 5:11]. A far cry from his single potty word in Indiana Jones: The Temple of Doom [Ps. 12:8]. Before I even get the numbers crunched, I am certain this PG-13 is a R-13 . But that is just my opinion so far.

Detectives Sgt. Joe Gavilan (Harrison Ford) and K.C. Calden (Josh Hartnett) are partners on the Hollywood police force, homicide division. Joe has been a cop forever but KC was just assigned to Joe four months ago. KC is not sure he wants to be a cop. He says he hates dead bodies, probably as a clever line to connect the main plot of murder investigations with KC observing morgue operations where he gets squirted by "a juicy one" cadaver as the pathologist starts slicing into it. But all is not lost. KC puts two and two together based on evidence found at the club shooting and on the bodies such as shoe size and jewelry and announces "Those two guys shot those two!" To provide another of several subplots, KC wants to be an actor.

Joe moonlights, rather, mingles police work with his Real Estate Broker business, another subplot to provide basis for Internal Affairs to accuse Joe of "mingling funds." Joe takes real estate phone calls while chasing bad guys in high-speed reckless chases. It would take only one big sale commission and Joe would be set for life. So, he relentlessly barters and haggles to sell a house for $6.75 million from a has-been Hollywood producer (Martin Landau) to a dance/rap club owner. One of Joe's real estate negotiations was while he was on duty standing among dead bodies.

In yet another subplot, Internal Affairs detective Bennie Macko (Bruce Greenwood) tries to ruin Joe as revenge [Rom. 12:19] for Joe turning Macko in for shady affairs. Macko's ex-girlfriend and psychic [Rev. 21:8], Ruby (Lena Olin) is the one with whom Joe is fooling around. Yes, there is intercourse in this PG-13. Twice. One of them is one of those "nothing is seen" episodes where nothing is left to the imagination. But in the other episode, "something" is definitely seen. And both episodes do not involve any of the bad guys, just the good guys.

Meanwhile, Joe and KC investigate the murders of four men in the dance/rap club, the Freeway Club [Deut. 5:17]. Two bad guys sneaked in and sprayed the occupants with automatic assault weapon fire [Gal. 5:21]. Fortunately, the writers avoided the blood and guts gore typically associated with gunfire murders in R-rated films ... until the police still photos are seen anyway. Investigations point to a music promoter named Sartain (Isaiah Washington) whose security chief operates like a gangster torchcing his murder victims. Sartain's victims includes performers who cost him money [Hab. 2:9].

Part of the Macko subplot involves Macko being suspicious of Joe for being seen associating with rich madam of prostitution, Ferre Salesclerk (Lolita Davidovich). Presentation of prostitution is not limited to the appearance of madam Salesclerk. Several images of tricks being serviced are seen as the shooters make their way through the Freeway Club. Lou Diamond Phillips even appears as Wanda, the cop in drag to foil the hookers [Prov. 23:27-28, Rev. 21:8].

By the way, my hunch at the beginning of this Summary/Commentary about Hollywood Homicide being a R-13 was right. And this is why. In addition to the language and sex issues, a few of which have already been mentioned, there is lots of gunfire to kill, reckless endangerment, vehicular assault, theft and many other issues of violence and crime [Hab. 2:12]. Please read the listing in the Findings/Scoring section for the most complete representation of this analysis model applied to Hollywood Homicide.

SPECIAL NOTE: We will be reducing the volume of coverage in the Summary/Commentary section of our reports and the number of reports generated in an effort to reduce costs until full funding can be achieved. The Findings/Scoring section of each report, the heart of the analysis model, will NOT be reduced in any way.

Thank you for your patience as we diligently search for funding. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help us locate 501(c)(3) nonprofit funding and sponsors is encouraged to notify me.

If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ]. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. • Col. 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
  • Eph. 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
  • Deut. 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain [shav' {shawv}: emptiness, nothingness, vanity]: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [With or without the four letter expletive, the use of God's name in any way other than respect, reverence or thoughtful discussion is in vain. That includes the popular three syllable sentence with His name trailing it AND the misuse of Jesus' name.]
  • Rom. 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
  • Deut. 5:17 You shall not murder.
  • Gal. 5:21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Hab. 2:9 Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain to set his nest on high, to escape the clutches of ruin!
  • Prov. 23:27-28 for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she [OR he] lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
  • Rev. 21:8 But the [unforgiven] cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars -their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
  • Hab. 2:12 Woe to him who builds a city [a place guarded by waking or a watch] with bloodshed and establishes a town [a collective such as a city, mob, gang or regime] by crime! [The 'city' or 'town' could even be wealth.]

***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry***
  • Ps. 12:8 The wicked freely strut about [e.g., create progressively vile/offensive entertainment with impunity and no consequences to younger and younger audiences every year] when what is vile is honored among men [when enough people continue to defend it, embrace it, pay for it, enjoy it, want it]. [I call attention to Ps. 12:8 to warn of the creeping desensitizing power of "entertainment."]
  • Col. 2:8 Beware lest any man [by his influence] spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 (KJV) Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. (NIV) Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Jude 4 For certain men* whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change [warp, distort, falsely represent, situationally redefine, counterfeit, conditionally apply] the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. [*men: anthropos {anth'-ro-pos}, generic, a human being, whether male or female]
  • Matt. 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto [or for] one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto [or for] me.
  • Luke 17:2 It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. [cause by teaching or example]
  • Ps. 119:133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.
  • John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
  • 1 Thess. 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

NOTE: While the Summary/Commentary section of these reports is precisely that -- a summary in commentary format which can be and sometimes is subjective, the actual CAP Analysis Model (the Findings/Scoring section) makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse, for manufacture of justification for, or camouflaging of ignominious content or aberrant behavior or imagery with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme/plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example of behavior or thought from the sinful display or of the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. We make no attempt to quantify the "artistic" or "entertainment" value of a movie -- whether a movie has any positive value or "entertainment" value is up to mom/dad. The CAP analysis model is the only known set of tools available to parents and grandparents which give *them* the control they need, bypassing the opinion-based assessment of movies by others and defeating the deceit of those who would say anything to convince their parents otherwise. The model is completely objective to His Word. Our investigation standards are founded in the teachings and expectations of Jesus Christ. If a sinful behavior is portrayed, it is called sinful whether Hollywood tries to make it otherwise. That the sinful behavior is "justified" by some manufactured conditions does not soften nor erase the price of sin. Whether there is application of fantasy "justification" or "redemption" is up to mom/dad.

"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings.
