Please read the text of the BEFORE You Read On... link. We tell you of the content of films which the MPAA, advertisers, trailers/previews, promoters, etc. cannot tell you or will not tell you so you might be in a better position to make a moral decision on your own whether a film is fit for your family's entertainment diet. We tell you what is there, you decide. And we give you some objective numeric tools to help you make your decision. A lot could be implied or drawn from what this film has to say, depending on your level of experiential maturity. One might take from Happy Feet that once one discovers who one is to nurture it ... no matter whether it flies in the face of the norm or parental wishes. But is it not true that who we are and what we do are two separate entities: that who we are does not dictate what we do; that who we are is not a choice while what we do is? Indeed, I have always believed that every single non-autonomic movement of the human body is a choice. No exceptions. No debate. One might also take from this film promotion of arrogance, rebellion and defiance of the norm or of authority in general, even if it costs him his place in the "family." But on a more positive note, one might view this film as an expression of not letting one's limitations hinder other talents and skills: to accept the absence of one skill while refining and nurturing others to excellence. The newborn son, Mumble (voice of Elijah Wood), of Memphis (voice of Hugh Jackman) and Norma Jean (voice of Nicole Kidman) who were brought together by song, could not sing. To sing is the way of the penguin. To not be able to sing was as welcome as a disease. Mumble was the only one of the thousands of tuxedo-clad birds who could not sing. Mumble could dance like Fred Astair but just could not sing. Every time he tried to sing, his voice would scratch like fingernails on a chalkboard and would be better as a foghorn at sea ... f-a-r out at sea ... than a singer. Everyone was intolerant of Mumble because he was different. He was abnormal. Memphis even tried to blame himself since he dropped the egg with Mumble in it. Many tried to change him into a singer but his mind was made up. Try as hard as he might, Mumble could not sing. Thus he resolved to accept what he perceived to be the way he was, even if it meant he had no chance to win the love of the beautiful singer, Gloria (Brittany Murphy), just like his father won the love of his mother. Forlorn and rejected, Mumble leaves the security of the flock. As many tale will lead, Mumble ends up getting involved with Ramone (Robin Williams) and his "kind" of smaller penguins who are accepting and encouraging of Mumble's difference. Mumble's quest changes to finding out why the fish have become so scarce as to threaten the very existence of every penguin on the bottom of the world. In his new quest Mumble meets the mystic shaman, Lovelace (also Robin Williams) who, amongst a flurry of sexual innuendo, advises that aliens are the cause of the fish loss. Now Mumble starts a trek to far off territory to find the aliens and talk them into stopping whatever it is they are doing to scare the fish off. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) The most graphic of the violence content of Happy Feet are a number of events of other animals threatening to kill and eat Mumble. Storm peril, action violence and a couple other matters of violence are the cause of the largest point loss across these six CAP investigation areas: W, I, S, D, O and M. It has been discovered that viewing violence in and as entertainment can and does cause the impressionable viewer to think of the world as darker (see Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on Children Congressional Public Health Summit). And strange it is that man would agree with God [1 Cor. 15:33, Prov. 16:29]. Impudence/Hate (I) Matters of impudence are limited to conceit and flatulence. Maybe someday Hollywood writers will be able to write a good kid's show without flatulence. While to many such behavior is indeed humorous, the One who spent three days in Hell so you and I would not have to spend one moment there advises that coarse humor is out of place [Eph. 5:4]. But lo and behold, not one single use of the three/four letter word vocabulary was noted. Sexual Immorality (S) Sexually oriented programming includes a number of the songs the penguins sing including such wording as "I just need your body from dusk to dawn" and "I just need your body baby." This investigation area also found two instances of a smaller penguin making what could be viewed as doglike mating motions on the leg of a larger penguin, both male. Remember folks, this is a PG film and it is not free of ignominy. However, light or subliminal the suggestion might be, it implants yet more exposure to it thus desensitizing us to it. Little by little. Younger and younger. [Luke 17:2] Drugs/Alcohol (D) Nothing was found having anything to do with illegal drugs, smoking, drinking or prescription drug abuse. Offense to God (O) While many believe calling someone a fool is acceptable, Jesus disagrees. [Matt. 5:22] At least six times someone is called a fool in Happy Feet. And the mystic worship was expensive to the scoring in this investigation area. [Deut. 5:7] Murder/Suicide (M) No murders or suicides were noted in the entire 97-minute film. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
