But I say it not for the same reason. He said it about something someone did. I say it because of the caliber of The Genius Club. The profundity in it is sometimes ... er ... profound. Seven people, all with IQs over 200 have been gathered along with President Holstrom (Jack Scalia) on Christmas Eve by Homeland Security Agent Brian Melhman (Huntley Ritter) to do intellectual battle with a lunatic, Armand (Tom Sizemore), who has decided to kill 500,000 people of Washington DC unless the geniuses can earn more than 1000 points in a game Armand is launching. The geniuses must solve the world's problems ... in one night. The geniuses will earn points for every solution they generate. If they earn more than 1000 points by 6:00 AM Armand will shut down a one megaton nuclear bomb he has planted in the basement of the building in which they have gathered. If the geniuses do not earn more than 1000 points, 500,000 people: all the citizens; all the workers; all the politicians; all seven of the geniuses and the President -- will die. And so will Armand. The story presents some intriguing and thought-provoking answers to the world's problems but I will not reveal any of them (except one) should you decide that, after knowing the content we expose, this film is fit for your audience. The seven geniuses upon whom the future of the world rests are: - Jacob Chernov (Jacob Bonnema), ex-lawyer now seminary student, IQ: of 214 - Edward Lee (Philip Moon), Yale professor of economics, IQ: 220 - Ally Simon (Tricia Helfer), painter dying of inoperable brain cancer, IQ: 221 - Tatiana Williams (Paula Jai Parker), Biochemist, IQ: 219 - Julia Endersol (Carol Abney), casino owner, IQ: 211 - Jose Delgado (Matt Medrano), professional baseball player, IQ: 217 - Rory Johnson (Stephen Baldwin), pizza delivery man, IQ: 229 (which later in the film jumps to 234) I promised above that I would not reveal any of the thought-provoking answers the story presents to the world's problems ... except one. Below is the "except one." Ally came up with "We still have war because no one has learned to forgive. All of us are the world's problem." It would seem to me that Ally's response that we need to learn to forgive was indeed the answer to all the world's problems but the story is a little more complex than that. In reality, do you not think that if forgiveness were on everyone's heart that all the world's problems would fade and eventually evaporate? Food for thought. The ilk of this film is indeed dark and sinister; is of extortion and coercion to perform with a threat of thousands being killed as the consequence of noncompliance. With a final score of 71 The Genius Club is PG-equivalent but is a hard PG to be sure. The score of 71 places the content of the film in the PG-equivalence range of 68 to 86 out of 100 but not very high on that scale. The Genius Club is not a check-your-brain-at-the-door, Saturday night flick. Some awareness of the world and its workings, inter- and inner-, will be helpful in understanding what the film has to say. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - Zero out of 100 Regarding the CAP analysis of this film one must accept that hundreds of "lesser" assaults on morality and decency can equal the influential magnitude of fewer but more severe and intense assaults. Indeed, many lesser assaults can be more influential and damaging than a few severe assaults. This is the case with the violence content of The Genius Club. Because of the sheer number of the "lesser" assaults such as screaming anger at someone and physically expressing anger [Col. 3:8], the magnitude of the violence content of The Genius Club was equivalent to the magnitude of the violence content of some R-rated films. The scoring range for R-equivalent films in the comparative baseline database is 54 and below out of 100. The Genius Club earned a zero in this investigation area. The feature the CAP Analysis Model to be able identify and quantify the concentration of assaults on morality in any one or more investigation areas as shown above is one of the many great features of the CAP Analysis Model. One of the properties of violence is that it can be and sometimes is "catching" and can lead the one exposed "into the way that is not good." [Prov. 16:29] Indeed, scientific man has finally come around to, whether intentional or even aware of it, agreeing with God. Four professional public health agencies jointly found that violence in and as entertainment indeed is "catching": that "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." But do we listen? Impudence/Hate (I) - 71 out of 100 While there are no completed uses of profanity or profane phrases noted in the entire 114 minutes of the show, there are a number of muffled, abbreviated and/or incomplete uses of profanity. Since such practices cause the profane term to form in the head of the observer any such uses are considered by the CAP Analysis Model the same as completed profanity. [Eph. 5:4] What I call secretive denial such as in ordering someone to lie, for example "what you saw did not happen", is used. Baldwin is seen wearing a nose ring throughout the film and is strongly rude repeatedly. Sexual Immorality (S) - 100 out of 100 There was noted not a shred of content related even remotely to sexually immoral behaviors. Not even a sexual innuendo. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 82 out of 100 Three times Professor Lee is seen with a cigarette. One reference to a bar and its bartender was used in one of the riddles the geniuses had to solve. One commercial for beer was seen. Offense to God (O) - 59 out of 100 God's name was used in vain only once throughout the entire show and then without the four letter expletive. People were called "fool" thrice. [Matt. 5:22] One scene mocked Jesus as He carried the Cross to Golgotha [Gal. 6:7] and a sequence of monologues belittle Christianity. Johnson equated Christianity with vanity and commercialism. Johnson may have been right about today's Christianity, but today's Christianity is not Christ. Through the years man has besmirched Christianity and has counterfeited it and applied situational ethics, convenience interpretations and conditional redefinitions to it. all to fill his own belly [Rom. 16:17 - 18]. Several times characters blamed God for their woes but the most faith-based "criminal" statement was made by Armand when he said "Jesus Christ was a good teacher but He was far from God", denying that which Jesus told us Himself. [John 10:30, John 14:9] Murder/Suicide (M) - 91 out of 100 Armand admits to detonating a nuclear bomb on an island, killing thousands. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
