The content of Fair Game earned a final score of 65 making it equivalent to the PG-13 films in the comparative baseline database. The PG-13 equivalent final score is because of G-equivalence in Sexual Immorality and Murder/Suicide, to PG-equivalence in Wanton Violence/Crime and Offense to God. However, Fair Game it is clearly R-equivalent in Impudence/Hate which includes profanity and in Drugs/Alcohol which are the reasons for the R-equivalent score. Impudence/Hate found 19 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary plus two uses of the most foul of the foul words. Drugs/Alcohol found drinking, smoking, drunkenness plus bars. Naomi Watts and Sean Penn star as the husband-and-wife CIA agent Valerie [Plame] Wilson and Ambassador Joe Wilson. The DVD cover claims the movie is inspired by true events so one must conclude there is some fact behind this film. At the end of the show is file footage of the real Valerie Wilson submitting to a committee. Valerie was dispatched to perform covert operations surrounding Saddam Hussein's development of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. The film uses a standard spy flick formula which we have all seen. Even the script calls on our memories of "007." Literally. Valerie's husband, Ambassador Wilson is drawn into the melee based upon her recommendation. Ambassador Wilson ends up questioning the reasons for the U.S. war on Iraq and writes a newspaper column launching his challenge. For whatever reason, Valerie's undercover spy status is leaked by the Whitehouse, apparently as a function of Ambassador Wilson's newspaper article. This caused danger and vulnerability to all her contacts which were dropping like flies under the bullets of assassins. The leak also left Valerie's life in shambles and in danger. She started receiving daily death threats and threats on her house and her children Samantha (Ashley Gerasimovich) and Trevor (Quinn Broggy). Now the war in focus has shifted from the war on Iraq to the war between the Wilsons and the Whitehouse. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 73 out of 100 The most intense violence content in this film is repeated images of inner city bombings and danger to the civil population, including children. Other items of violence include threats to do harm and assaults. Impudence/Hate (I) - 17 out of 100 Nineteen times someone utters some form of the three/four letter word vocabulary plus two uses of the most foul of the foul words. [Col. 3:8] Other than the profanity, the lying and excusing of lies were all that caused point loss in this investigation area. But there was enough of these two matters to reduce the original 100 points to 42 making the content applicable to this investigation area R-equivalent. Sexual Immorality (S) - 87 out of 100 No nudity or intercourse at all which is quite atypical of PG-13 movies. The only content associated with sexually immoral behavior were the rude gaze, the booty call, the sex talk and the anatomical reference. This investigation area could find only enough applicable content to be G-equivalent in this investigation area. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 40 out of 100 Smoking, drinking. booze and drunkenness. Familiar friends of PG-13. This investigation area found content to be equivalent to the typical PG-13. But that is bad enough because it is viewable by 13 year olds. So sayeth the American College of Physicians. A 2002 study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) revealed that adolescent exposure to drinking in and as entertainment undeniably leads to abuse of alcohol among underage viewers. The finding entitled Relation Between Parental Restrictions on Movies and Adolescent Use of Tobacco and Alcohol reports that of 4544 youths from grades 5 through 8 of fifteen Vermont and New Hampshire middle schools (90% of the youths were under fourteen years old) only 16% were completely restricted in their entertainment diets. Within the ACP study population, the prevalence of having tried alcohol without parental knowledge was • 46% for those with no viewing restrictions • 16% for those with partial viewing restrictions • four percent for those with complete viewing restrictions. [Eph 5:18 Offense to God (O) - 70 out of 100 God's name was abused seven times. One of them with the four letter expletive. God is not happy at all with such behavior. [Deut. 5:11] There were, however, no instances of witchcraft, sorcery, occultism or the like. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No one was murdered nor did anyone commit suicide. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
