Facing the Giants is a Christian-made film about Christian things in a Christian way. That, in the minds of the politically correct MPAA, apparently is at least PG. Though the MPAA rated the film PG it earned a solid G-equivalent CAP final score of 96 out of 100, making it a G-PG. The film is founded in Matthew 19:26 "But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this [Salvation, from Matt. 19:25] is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Note that His Word says "all things." Not "some things" or "most things under certain conditions" or "occasionally all things." It says "all things." The entire film is built upon how God is capable of anything He wishes, even if it is something, in our perspective, as simple as a football team becoming state champions after a 6 straight years of losing. With his wife, Brooke (Shannen FIelds) at his side, Grant Taylor (Alex Kendrick) has been coaching the Shiloh Christian Academy football team. But for 6 years they have not had a winning season. The Academy management is considering putting assistant coach, Brady Owns (Tracey Goode) in the head coach position. This was reason for God to make a[nother] move in Grant's life. Into Grant's life comes Mr. Bridges (Ray Wood), a man who has been praying for the students by passing over all the lockers in prayer every week since before Grant arrived. The message Mr. Bridges had from God for Grant was to prepare his fields for rain. The story Mr. Bridges told was that two farmers who were in desperate need of rain both prayed to God for rain. But only one farmer prepared his fields for rain. Now the question is which farmer trusted God the most? Grant proceeded to "prepare his fields for rain": to prepare his team for rains of God's grace; to prepare his team to give glory and praise to God for the rain of grace He will soon shed on them. I am not going to spoil how Grant prepared his fields for rain in case you would like to view this film. The following paragraphs briefly discuss the questionable contents, if any, found in each investigation area. Because this film earned a score of 87 or more in each of the six CAP Investigation areas, it has earned the rare green CAPCon Alert Light. In support of the morally high final score, the CAP influence density (ID) of 0.08 is one of the lowest (best) ID scores I have seen. Films rated PG in the developmental comparative baseline database earned ID scores of 0.24 to 0.54, the lower the figure the better the score. G-rated films in the baseline database earned ID scores of 0.00 to 0.23. This film earned an ID score of 0.08. While it is my own ministry policy to not make any recommendations about whether to see a film, mom/dad, this is a good film! Wanton Violence/Crime (W) - 87 out of 100 The only violence in the entire film is relatively frequent football violence and a rather animated teaching session by Coach Taylor. Impudence/Hate (I) - 90 out of 100 The only impudence and/or hatred content is a son defying his father, a minor tantrum by Coach Taylor and an episode of poor sportsmanship by an opposing team. [2Tim. 2:5] There is no profanity in this film whatsoever. Not even euphemisms or abbreviations of profanity. Sexual Immorality (S) - 100 out of 100 There is absolutely nothing even approaching sexually immoral behavior or display in the entire 105 minutes of program. Even a cheer routine in which a cheerleader lifted her legs and spread them apart was performed facing away from the camera. Drugs/Alcohol (D) - 100 out of 100 No bars, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs nor abuse of prescription drugs were found. Offense to God (O) - 97 out of 100 The only instance applicable to this investigation area was one of the team members doubting the reality of God. God's name was not used even once in vain, with or without the four letter expletive. Not even in the popular three syllable sentence with his name trailing it. There were no instances of occultism, satanism, demonism evil manifestations or anything of the kind. Murder/Suicide (M) - 100 out of 100 No murders or suicides were found. SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ] or bold. There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
