Intelligent life on other planets -- an issue on the minds of many for years. Since the inception of science fiction in entertainment, thoughts of whether life on other planets exists have invaded the minds of nearly everyone. Is there life on other planets? Intelligent life? Super-intelligent life? Signals from outer space ... or maybe somewhere else ... are examined and scrutinized by top scientists and powerful people in this story of the effects of an extraordinary situation on even intelligent professionals. A story of how only faith in Jesus Christ can save us from the deceiver: that, left to our own understanding, our days may be shortened [Prov. 3:5 - 7]. The story opens with Colonel David Garrett (Louis Gossett, Jr.) mulling over the results of some top-secret paranormal experimentation conducted by the military hoping paranormal powers will keep the US a world super-power. Experiment after experiment had failed until a small fragment of a signal received from outer space by an Argentinean observatory creates a mind control giant of one of the officers in Col. Garrett's command. Lieutenant Vasquez, already fiercely disciplined, is now able to mentally manipulate objects ... and people. Word of confirmation of another signal from outer space reaches Col. Garrett from the Shaw Observatory in the Sierra Nevada mountains, owned by billionaire Emmett Shaw (Stewart Bick). First to arrive at the Shaw Observatory is Shaw and his entourage of three experts in their fields: Smitty Turner (Michelle Nolden), Director of Operations of Shaw Industries; Jack Jones (Judd Nelson), hearing impaired chief computer technician for the Shaw Observatory and lead technical expert for the project; Reverend "Fletch" Fletcher (Jefferson Mappin), the rotund host of the number one radio talk show in America there to "provide Spiritual guidance" for Shaw. Also maneuvering her way into the entourage is Kara Walsh (Deborah Odell), top notch and enterprising investigative journalist who is there to provide a link to the news industry. Shaw and company are there to configure the extraterrestrial signal for broadcast to the world -- for money: to make Shaw a $100 billionaire instead of a mere $50 billionaire. Finding the observatory a shambles with no trace of the two technicians who staff it, Jack hustles to reestablish operation of the observatory. As observatory operations begin to revive, Col. Garrett arrives with a squad of heavily armed commandos to take charge of the observatory -- in the interest of national security, of course. As system after system comes back online and operational, the signal from outer space returns. Wise in his job, Jack knew to save the signal to disk. But maybe it was not necessary to save the signal. The signal cannot be deleted, modified, made louder or softer or manipulated in any way. And the disk to which Jack saved the signal suddenly appears blank. Now comes the edge-of-the-seat suspense. As the people in the observatory listen to the sound of the signal from outer space, a "demon presence" flashes in their eyes. Shortly after hearing the signal the people begin to express aggressive personality features such as lust, greed, hatred, arrogance and envy. And each time they listen to the narcotic signal from outer space the aggressive personality features become more and more aggressive and even evil -- except in two people. Noticing this, Smitty does some investigation and finds that there are no confirmations that the signal came from outer space: that there are no coordinates of origin! All the computer technology in the entire observatory could not find the origin of the signal. If the signal did not come from outer space, from where did it come? The answer has profound meaning to the Christian. Which two people were not victimized by the narcotic signal? Why were they not affected? What happened to the two original technicians? Who is "DON TRELA" ... written in blood ... upside down? Who is being deceived? Who is doing the deceiving? Another profound matter to Deceived is the answer to the question "How are 'open minded and enlightened' New Age religious leaders who situational redefine, counterfeit and conditionally apply the Scriptures a danger to us?" There is much more to this faith-based story than I have revealed. And some of it can be sobering to your life. Answers to all of these questions are to be found in Deceived. Since this is an interactive ministry, you are free to send me Take heed, though. This is not a film for the younger viewer. The experiential maturity in Spiritual development possessed by some older teens and adults is necessary to prevent the challenges in the story and roles from confusing and possibly contaminating Spiritual development [Ps. 119:10, Prov. 22:6]. There is also graphic gunfire killing in this movie [Prov. 3:31, Jonah 3:8]. While there are only two examples of the use of the three/four letter word vocabulary and one instance of the use of God's name in vain, there are a few instances of "lightweight" sexual programming as a beautiful woman tries to use her sensuality to gain favors, once in a physical sense though clothed [Gal. 5:19]. There is no nudity, brief or partial, male or female, in Deceived. These and additional matters that may be of concern to mom/dad are included in the Findings/Scoring section. By the CAP final score of 60, confidence is high that Deceived would have been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. PG-13 movies in the CAP baseline database earned scores of 55 to 67 out of 100. An Influence Density (ID) figure of 0.72 corroborates the likelihood of being rated PG-13. PG-13 movies in the CAP baseline database earned influence densities of 0.52 to 0.84 with zero being best. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |
(The objective heart of the CAP Analysis Model, independent of and insulated from the Summary/ Commentary section.) Wanton Violence/Crime (W) Impudence/Hate (I) Sexual Immorality (S) Drugs/Alcohol (D): Offense to God (O) Murder/Suicide (M) |
NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth. |
"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our nearly seven years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
