It usually takes one and a half to two log pages of findings for a PG-13 film. Casino Royale took five. We'll see if it is R-13. In about an hour. Sure enough. Casino Royale earned a final score of 38 out of 100. The R-rated films in the comparative baseline database each earned scores of 54 or less. That makes the content of the PG-13 Casino Royale clearly equivalent to R-rated films -- an R-13, a "hard" R-13 at that. One of the biggest reasons Casino Royale earned a R-13 score is because of the long sequence of repeated views of full male nudity plus the repeated brutalization of his genitals. Though the genitals of the actor (Craig) remain unseen the rest of him is fully visible, pubic hair included. That the MPAA could think such sexual display is fit for 13 year old kids is beyond belief. Such display is not fit for anyone let alone 13 year old kids. [**] That modern man has decided that nudity is acceptable in and as entertainment does not make it so. If this film is not another perfect example of Ps. 12:8 I do not know what is. Bond (Daniel Craig, the quintessential exhibitionist) travels the world under the auspices of the British government to do warfare with terrorism financiers, stock market manipulators and other bad guys. For this film one sentence in the Summary/Commentary is enough. I am so incensed by the flagrant sexual exhibitionism in it and the declaring of such display as fit for 13 year old kids I will not give it any cinematic attention beyond one sentence and will move into the reason most parents visit our service. Wanton Violence/Crime (W) With the lowest possible score in any one investigation area, Wanton Violence/Crime earned a score of zero out of 100, making it clearly equivalent to most R-rated films in violence/crime since all R-rated films in the comparative baseline database earned 54 or less out of 100. Zero is certainly less than 54. There are too many examples of such programming to summarize here. Most of them are gun-related. [Prov. 16:29, Hab. 2:9] The listing in the Findings/Scoring section provides itemized details of the violence/crime content. Impudence/Hate (I) With 18 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary and no uses of the most foul of the foul words, this R-13 is atypical of most R-13 films regarding profanity. [Prov. 22:11] It is, however, bad enough. Contempt for clean language and purity of speech is in violation of God's standards even if used once. [Col. 3:8] And the copycat propensities of such disregard invoke Luke 17:2. Sexual Immorality (S) This investigation area found enough programming to also cause loss of all the starting 100 points. The repeated views of full male nudity were expensive to the starting 100 points [1Cor. 12:23]. There were instances also of making out on the floor clothed and in bed nude, women as toys/ornaments, many instances of excessive cleavage and/or breast exposure, sucking fingers to arouse and many other examples of sexually oriented behaviors. [Gal. 5:19] God is rather stern about sexually immoral behaviors. Eternally. [Rev. 22:15] Drugs/Alcohol (D) Repeated instances of booze and drinking plus one instance of drugging drained two-thirds of the Drugs/Alcohol investigation area starting 100 points. "It's only a movie!" A common attempt at excusing such programming in and as entertainment. A study by the American College of Physicians (ACP) says otherwise. The study reported an undeniable link between the presentation of alcoholic beverages (and tobacco) in and as entertainment and abuse of them and arrogance/defiance with them by adolescents. Teaching/causing youth to abuse alcohol/tobacco (or drugs) by emboldening youth with them in and as entertainment invokes Luke 17:2. If alcoholic beverages in entertainment were not a problem for our young, why is there and why has there been such a push to get and keep booze commercials off prime time broadcast TV? Even the University of Connecticut corroborates the ACP finding. [Eph. 5:18] Offense to God (O) In addition to a couple uses of God's name in vain though each is without the four letter expletive [Deut. 5:11], a claim of not believing in God [Num. 14:11], adultery [Hebr. 13:4] and gambling evaporated over one third of the starting 100 points in this investigation area. Murder/Suicide (M) Wile there are several killings in Casino Royale most were a "lawman" killing criminals or defensive killings. What are deemed deaths by police action are not considered murders by the CAP analysis model. Thus, most killings are incorporated into the Wanton Violence/Crime investigation area. There were then two actual murders in the film, both rather graphic plus a graphic scene of a murder victim. One of them garnered an "Oh, yeah!" from one of the teens in the audience. CHAPTER/VERSE ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
