BLUE CRUSH (PG-13) -- "Beware lest any man spoil you..." Production: Imagine Entertainment, Universal Pictures Distribution: MCA/Universal Pictures Director(s): John Stockwell Producer(s): Rick Dallago, Louis G. Friedman, Brian Grazer, Kathy Jones, Karen Kehela, Buffy Shutt Written by/Screenplay: Story: Susan Orlean, Lizzy Weiss. Screenplay: Lizzy Weiss, John Stockwell Cinematography/Camera: David Hennings Music: Paul Haslinger Film Editing: Emma E. Hickox Casting: Sarah Finn, Randi Hiller Production Design: Tom Meyer Art Direction: Denise Hudson Some of the finest surf and underwater camera work I have ever seen. I'll bet it is really cool to be brushing the vertical wall of seawater when riding in the surf pipe (or shooting the curl as it used to be called in The Beach Boys and The Ventures days). Some of the finest athletics I've ever seen ... and some of the briefest swim wear I have ever seen, on a 12 year old, too. If this R-13 movie was targeted at the snicker-giggle, backwards-hat, choking-perfume, feet-on-the-chairs, bare-midriff, just-got-their-license crowd, targeting was successful. There was much display of quite revealing swim wear in Blue Crush. Let me explain the relative term "revealing." In our analysis model, if the under-curvature of the buttocks or breasts is visible, it is revealing. And there is a lot of it in Blue Crush. Even on a 12 year old little girl. Three years ago, surfing champion wannabe Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth) had a near fatal surfing mishap that made her hang up her board. While living in a leaky beach front shack, Anne Marie is coached by tough-talking Eden (Michelle Rodriguez) and re-enters competition by signing up to participate in the Hawaiian Pipemasters competition. Michelle Rodriguez was this time a regular girl instead of the glaring-through-her-eyebrows gung-ho, gun-ho commando she was in Resident Evil. Anne Marie is also coached by another in her motel maid trio, Lena (Sanoe Lake). Anne Marie is also encouraged as well as impeded by her sister, Penny (Mika Boorem). Penny is 12 years old, going on 18. Anne Marie is raising Penny for reasons I was not able to gather. Anne Marie is not doing a very good job of it, favoring her "duties" to surfing over proper supervision of Penny. Also in the fray of support/conflict is NFL quarterback Matt Tollman (Matthew Davis) who just happens to be in Hawaii for the Pro bowl, who just happens to be in the motel as Anne Marie and company are cleaning, who just happens to catch her eye as he politely said "excuse us" as he and others of his team rammed past Anne and company, who just happens to end up in bed with her. This IS a PG-13 after all. Two plus two equals four. Several land-based subplots try to rescue this somewhat empty adventure of a pro sports wannabe. This movie is obviously targeted at adolescents and there is something for everyone. At least what Hollywood thinks everyone wants or has taught everyone what they want. For the boys, there is a lot of skin. For the girls, it is a story of a woman getting into "male" sports. Though I know nothing of making films, talent was there but not utilized. Support cast were cardboard and could have been played even by the likes of me. There is no chemistry in this teen flick. There is just attitude suffocating the outstanding camera work of what could have been a fine movie. There is not much more to say about this escapade into mindless exhibitionism other than that which you probably came to hear. There is a lot of squeezing of posterior flesh out from under swim wear. Several minutes of footage included clearly for-show side nudity of breasts in a dress that, for all practical purposes, had no front [Prov. 7:26-27]. There is even used condom "humor." [Eph. 5:4] The 12 year old Penny gets into the anatomical references right there with the fullback and in other sexual situations such as snuggling with an adult at a drinking party and wearing exceptionally revealing swim wear. [Luke 17:2] Offscreen intercourse, nudity under sheets and cohabitation top off the "PG-13" of this PG-13 movie. [1Cor. 7:2] Language is typical of PG-13 but lo and behold there were no instances of the most foul of the foul word noted (except one muffled utterance of it) and while there were tons of the use of God's name in vain without the four letter expletive there were none noted with it. Clearly the most invasive presences in this 102 minute flick were sexual and language. While many will say "There is nothing wrong with that sort of swim wear and language. Get with the times!" God says [Col. 2:8] "Beware lest any man spoil you [to lead away from the truth and subject to one's sway] through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world [the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men [generic, meaning people] alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ], and not after Christ." NOTE: The CAP Analysis Model makes no scoring allowances for trumped-up "messages" to excuse or for manufacturing of justification for aberrant behavior or imagery, or for camouflaging such ignominy with "redeeming" programming. Disguising sinful behavior in a theme plot does not excuse the sinful behavior of either the one who is drawing pleasure or example from the sinful display or the practitioners demonstrating the sinful behavior. This is NOT a movie review service. It is a movie analysis service to parents and grandparents to tell them the truth about movies using the Truth. |
"There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our nearly seven years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
