The MPAA gave this flick a PG-13 rating but it earned a hardcore R-13 score of 21! Woe when what is vile by His standards is embraced by men! [Ps. 12:8] I wish I could have gotten this analysis report to you sooner, but intensive in-service fostercare training and travel to and from it has been expensive these past three weeks. Only one more week to go. The best expression I can come up with to describe The Big Bounce is "bubble gum entertainment." But this PG-13 bubble gum has rock salt in it. Nudity [**], murder [Prov. 28:17], foul language of all types [Col. 3:8], exploitation of the woman's body with a faceless head on it [1Ths. 4:1-5]. God's name in vain and mockery of Him [Gal. 6:7]. On Oahu, Hawaii Jack Ryan (Owen Wilson) was a small time crook [Hab. 2:9] and a drifter until one day a buxom blonde, Nancy Hayes (Sara Foster) convinced Jack to steal $200,000. Jack became unwittingly snatched up into a conspiracy to eliminate a no-good adulterous womanizing builder, Ray Ritchie (Gary Sinise) whose wife Alison (Bebe Neuwirth) was in on the plot. Also in on the plot is local judge Walter Crewes (Morgan Freeman) who also operated the Keiki Vista Resort where young women saunter by every day. Pretending to take Jack under his wing, Crewes hired Jack to be the handyman for the resort while grooming him for the caper. With a quality and experienced cast such as that for The Big Bounce one might expect at least some entertaining performances. But alas, the performances were more of the order of a cheap dime novel (if I understand the use of that term correctly). If your 13 year old child has attended this film, s/he has heard in 80 minutes 45 uses of the three/four letter word vocabulary, one use of the most foul of the foul words, God's name in vain both with and without the four letter expletive. S/he has seen full nudity, inappropriate touch (both heterosexual and homosexual), a woman removing her underwear from under a very short skirt to seduce a man, and a whole lot more behaviors you would not want your 13 year old to practice. [Luke 17:2] I must keep this one short to minimize costs so please rely on the listing in the Findings/Scoring section which is not affected by the cost minimization for a full accounting of what was found.
SCRIPTURAL APPLICATION(S) If needed to focus or fortify, applicable text is underlined or bracketed [ ]. If you wish to have full context available, the Blue Letter Bible is a convenient source. If you use the Blue Letter Bible, a new window will open. Close it to return here or use "Window" in your browser's menu bar to alternate between the CAP page and the Blue Letter Bible page. ** "Nakedness" (display of nudity) is spoken of as dark, restricted, undesirable, shameful, etc. 47 times in the KJV from Genesis to Revelation. ***Selected Scriptures of Armour against the influence of the entertainment industry*** As always, it is best to refer to the Findings/Scoring section -- the heart of the CAP analysis model -- for the most complete assessment possible of this movie. |

There are some in the entertainment industry who maintain that 1) violent programming is harmless because no studies exist that prove a connection between violent entertainment and aggressive behavior in children, and 2) young people know that television, movies, and video games are simply fantasy. Unfortunately, they are wrong on both accounts." And "Viewing violence may lead to real life violence." I applaud these associations for fortifying 1 Cor. 15:33. Read the rest of the story. From our more than eight years of study, I contend that other aberrant behaviors, attitudes, and expressions can be inserted in place of "violence" in that statement. Our Director - Child Psychology Support, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist concurs. For example, "Viewing arrogance against fair authority may lead to your kids defying you in real life." Or "Viewing sex may lead to sex in real life." Likewise and especially with impudence, hate and foul language. I further contend that any positive behavior can be inserted in place of "violence" with the same chance or likelihood of being a behavior template for the observer; of being incorporated into the behavior mechanics and/or coping skills of the observer. In choosing your entertainment, please consider carefully the "rest of the story" and our findings. |
